Received this book which looks like it would be a good one to have around for anyone even if your not a canner. It has a lot of things in it. This is on our daughters Christmas list. Only problem we had was the book cover was thorn when we received it. I was going to just keep it and decided to order two more and give them as gifts. When the additional two came, another one came with the cover thorn. I tried to contact someone at amazon to see if I could just get covers for the damaged ones and was unable to reach anyone. I ended up keeping the one book that had no damage to it and returning the two. I feel this is a good book to have and received it quickly from amazon, however when I had a problem my only option was to return. If I need the other two books for gifts, I will have to just buy them at a book store where I can make sure the covers are ok. I do want to say the return went through with no problems and it was very easy.

I had figured this book would be a fun one to have, with a few recipes that I would really enjoy and make all the time. Once I got it, though, I had a bit of trouble. Which one do I want to make first? ALL of the recipes look good! It's going to be a lot of fun to make all of the recipes, but even more fun to eat them! I'm going to make the various candies first thing, but there are some that I'm keeping in mind for big family dinners. Once I took a closer look, I realized that there's a lot of humor in the book. My favorite line? "Nothing in this world is bad when a pound of butter and a hammer are involved." Karen Solomon has great recipes and made sure that the cookbook is fun to read, even if you aren't going to cook at the moment.

Borrowed this book from a neighbor who got it out of the library. I loved it so much I bought it! I made the marshmallows and graham crackers, added hershey bars and marshmallow sticks and gave them to my nieces and nephews as s'mores family gifts. They were a big hit. Next I want to try the potato chips and limoncello. Some interesting things I would never think of making like my own ricotta cheese but somehow this book inspires me to want to try! Great pictures of how the project looks midstream (esp the marshmallows) and a handy mention at the top of how much of a time commitment each project will take. Lots of neat ideas for packaging gifts also. I love giving home made gifts from my kitchen and this book has many wonderful ideas. I have little ones in my family who like the strips of processed fruit for their lunches and the recipe in this book for apple fruit leather looks so easy I may have to try it too. Highly recommended.

This book is right on target with what I wanted it to be. It has simple recipes for all sorts of homey little treats that are otherwise scattered throughout my cookbook collection. Want to make marshmallows, gravlax pasta,etc.?, this is your book. The only possible criticism is that it's a little bit light. For instance, you could make the ginger beer carbonated if you added a little yeast. You can also make sugar free ice cream by putting frozen fruits in a high powered blender, etc. How about impossible pies (look it up). The correct way to think of this book, though, is to regard it as introductory. If you like any of this stuff and I'm sure you will, you can expand your knowledge dramatically and for free through Google.

Have you ever wanted to make things that you generally buy pre-packaged, full of chemicals, sugar, and just plain overpriced? This cookbook is definitely a kitchen adventure. From mayonnaise to peanut butter cups, bacon to limoncello, it has a little bit of everything that you'd never think to make on your own!I have about 70 cookbooks in my collection and this is the first one that I immediately made 4 recipes from - graham crackers, peanut butter cups, marshmallows, and pasta - all things that I had never made before and all four turned out beautifully! I am never going to buy marshmallows in a bag again! The instructions are easy to follow, the pictures are beautiful, and most recipes aren't written to take a lifetime in the kitchen (which is important for me with a husband and baby at home). I've already recommended it to my "serious" cook friends - this is not a cookbook for a novice or someone who doesn't know their way around the kitchen. But if you love to cook, this one is for you!

I am an avid collector and user of hundreds of cookbooks. I already make jam and such things, but this book filled a void in my collection. Having a few recipes on pickling, canning, etc. certainly inspires your own variations.One critical element that this book includes that most of my others do not - what to do with all of your little homemade condiments and fresh cheese. I can certainly come up with my own ideas, but it's refreshing to find an author that includes items from the book in the other recipes within the book. You can take as many steps as you like and use the finished product or morph it into something even bigger. I also never thought of making my own butter with the added bonus of buttermilk, which doesn't exist in my part of the world. Kudos to Karen Solomon!
