I finished reading this book for the first time a few minutes ago. I say "for the first time" because I want to review it again soon. It was that good. This is a guide in all the best senses of the word, but the first that comes to mind is how simply she presents the topic. No, not simple as in sparse, but simple in that she makes it easy to understand while utilizing excellent examples. It was a guide, but now it's an invaluable reference.I took algebra in junior high and again in high school and struggled both times. In college I took it again from an instructor who knew how to teach the subject and the mathematical lightbulb went on above my head. This guide was like that. It was as if she knew the questions that would surface before I did. I'd end a chapter with a half-a-dozen, "But what about...?" and she'd answer all those questions and more in the next chapter or the one after. Marcy Kennedy isn't just a good good guide author, she's an excellent teacher.This is the first of Ms. Kennedy's guides that I've read, but it won't be the last. She knows how to present a subject, explain it, teach it, and leave you excited at the thought of utilizing what you've learned. I knew I wanted to learn deep POV when I purchased the book, but by the second chapter I was excited to get to work. I highly recommend this book.
I have purchased the entire Busy Writer Guide series, and this book is one that I had been waiting for. It's taken me so long to really wrap my head around writing in deep point of view and Ms. Kennedy explains it so clearly, it almost feels effortless. What I like most is the "Take it to the Page" section which let me apply these techniques to my own writing. To me, this makes all the difference in the world. It is one thing to read books on writing techniques, it is an entirely different learning experience when you have practical guides to apply in your own writing. I recommend any writer at any level to read this or any of the other books in the Bus Writer Guide series, you won't be disappointed.
This book has forever changed my writing. I don't often give five stars for books, particularly those devoted to the writing craft.They are often shallow and they seem to have been written in an afternoon. Not so Deep Point of View. Immediately I recognized that this was a book that offers real help. Rather than passively receiving someone's idea of writing better prose, reading the book is like having Ms. Kennedy sitting with you while you write. I am going over my manuscript a chapter at a time in response to each and every chapter. You'd better believe I quickly bought the rest of the Busy Writer's Guides and they are just as valuable. Thanks, Ms. Kennedy, for giving us real and valuable help!
The book in question is never far from my elbow. In fact, the same is true for all of Marcy Kennedy's books for busy writers. (Wish I were a busy writer.) While "Deep POV" has made a special impact upon my writing, I will say that the books by M Kennedy that came before it have emboldened me to boast that I am a writer. In the past I thought it flippant of myself to say so but now I understand the many techniques she has taught me, I'm really not ashamed to say it out loud.I wrote three books before I even heard of M. Kennedy and now of course I wish I had written them post Kennedy. Oh, they would have come out so much better. I'm writing one currently and this time she's on every page with me. Thank you Marcy Kennedy.I would highly recommend "Deep POV" to all writers and even go a step further. I'd recommend it to all readers who are curious about how and why they enjoy the books they read. I know I am enjoying reading no end since I encountered M. Kennedy. I have bought every one of Marcy Kennedy's books. They are well worth their price. She lays out the how-to's in a concise way. I like the fact she explains the principle and then gives examples. She doesn't pussy foot around. I want to protest at times, but she is so clear in her instructions, I have no choice but to follow them. I am most grateful because she has cleared up quite a few points of confusion for me. I highly recommend her books.
This is a fast read that is good to review while you’re writing your manuscript and again when you go back over to edit it.Writing in deep point of view, whether in first or third person, past or present tense, gives your reader the opportunity to experience the character’s world as s/he experiences it. This builds a strong emotional bond between your reader and your character’s story.I liked the examples Kennedy gave as well as her check list of things to look for when you’re editing your book. This is a great guide for anyone interested in writing strong POVs.
Deep Point of View (A Busy Writer's Guide) by author Marcy Kennedy does a great job of explaining this sometimes confusing subject. In each chapter, the author goes straight to the point without wasting time on wordiness. She goes for the jugular every time, illustrating how to think and reorient yourself to the topic. If you're curious about what deep point of view is—and how to use it in your writing—this book is for you.
This has useful guidance on POV. I bought it b/c my characters tend to be too 'distant' and this offered quite practical tips to avoid distancing language. It also had exercises to help you get to know your characters. Most of the examples were drawn from contemporary fiction on the commercial end...so less helpful for literary, historical fiction. I read it and passed it on to a friend.
