Review
"Tender Buttons is a showcase of Stein's joyful draw to words."--Dina Weinstein, Jewish Book Council"What distinguishes this edition from others is over 100 edits, some indicated by Stein in her unmistakable handwriting found by editor Perlow in a first-edition copy held at the University of Colorado, as well as other corrections gleaned from her papers at Beinecke Library of Yale University and from the Library of America edition."--Karren LaLonde Alenier, Scene4 Magazine"She did in writing what Picasso and her other painter friends were doing in their Cubist painting. Writing had to be moved out of the grip of the nineteenth century. All naturalistic description, romanticism and sentimentality had to be left behind."--Renate Stendhal, San Francisco Bay Times"Tender Buttons is a dazzling work that rewards close study and requires a willingness to let go of the need for concrete, literal storytelling."--Christopher Luna, Rain Taxi Review of Books

This work seems designed to free language, and thus the mind and heart, from the constraints we adopt as life slowly calcifies us into predictable dullness, the death of the imagination. No sentence ends as expected. But each works an internal coherence of its own.Picture yourself reading it under a tree in Vietnam 50 years ago, trying to get free of the imperative to "make sense". It might have helped.
As the owner of the very hard to find 1914 first edition (and at least 15 other editions, both in English and in translation), I must commend City Lights Publishers for this significant and historic edition!GertrudeandAlice were not happy with the printing and binding of the first edition, which is a very fragile hardcover. Even though some may find this printing not to their liking, it is a quality paperback which, with its annotations and informational essays, will make this modernist, literary milestone accessible to a wide readership. GertrudeandAlice would approve!PSFor book collectors, books with uncut pages are often more valuable!
I'm baffled that this got published. Listen to the other reviews on this. It's pure nonsense. I'm sure Stein knew what these poems meant when she wrote them, but the meaning is lost on me now - and I'm an English major!Honestly? I'd recommend you'd download this. Just to read a couple of pages and marvel at what nonsense it is. It's hard to understand unless you see it for yourself, and it actually is kind of good for a laugh. Don't read it thinking you're going to be blown away by marvelous poetry, though.
Stein gets five stars for trying to create a new poetry, much like trying to create a new novel. Later imitators have a much easier job than the original creator. Stein is far from perfect in this work and sometimes it outright fails, but it's challenging and more creative than 99% of the stuff that is someone trying to write a better poem or novel.
This is not an exercise in pretentious nonsense to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.
Gertrude Stein is one of those authors that I have long felt that I need to get to someday. When "Tender Buttons" was offered free on a daily Kindle deal, I selected it and then forgot about it for a while. When I finally got around to reading it, I thought there had been some mistake with the download or the Kindle formatting - perhaps pages were missing? or perhaps the text had gotten jumbled or truncated in the Kindle formatting? I found it to be complete nonsense - a string of words with vaguely poetic cadence, but no meaning that I could detect. But it was late in the evening and I had had a couple of glasses of wine so I thought my synapses weren't working efficiently. I picked it up again a few days later under more optimum conditions, and still couldn't gain any meaning from the sequence of the random little words. Others have written that her writing style is "brilliant" and "out of the box". If so, I prefer to stay in the box. I slogged through about half of the book, then just pressed the forward button until I got to the end to see if she had been playing a joke on us, and would commence some real expository prose by the end - it never happened.Nevertheless, I have downloaded another Gertrude Stein novel and will have a go at it since, at first glance, it does appear to be in a more normal writing style. I'm not ready to give up on her yet !
Yikes! I did read the negative one star reviews but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. I think it was free. Sometimes a re-read will clear things up, but I doubt I'll give this a second try. I agree with all the other one-star reviewers.
I made it about half way through, I kept coming back thinking there must be something here. If there is, I never found it.
