Every Bone Tells a Story: Hominin Discoveries, Deductions, and Debates, by Jill Rubalcaba Peter Robertshaw

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up—The authors have taken an unusual approach in this look at members of the human family tree. Rather than sketch all of human prehistory, they focus on four particular discoveries, noting the deductions that scientists have made and the debates that these conclusions have sparked. The finds that they detail are Turkana Boy, Lapedo Child, Kennewick Man, and Ötzi the Iceman. This approach will be helpful for students as it makes clear the type of work done by paleontologists, archaeologists, and their ilk. There is a lot of painstaking effort and a lot of careful thought. It is particularly interesting to learn what sorts of debates an activity as innocent-seeming as archaeology can engender. Full-color photos, an occasional map or diagram, and an illustrated time line enhance the presentation. As they have focused on only four individuals, readers may miss their personal favorites, such as "Lucy" and the recently discovered Homo floresiensis, nicknamed "hobbits." There are also some scientific points that aren't explained as well as they might be. In their discussion of genetics, for example, the authors refer to C, G, A, and T without ever explaining that these are the initials of cytosine, guanine, adenine, and thymine. While there are a few print sources from recent years, many go back 10 years or more. Despite a few quibbles, this is an excellent look at an engaging area of science that should find broad readership and use.—Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Library, Wisconsin Rapids, WI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Archaeology and paleontology are the exciting focus in this accessible account of four hominins who lived long before recorded history. The authors explore not only how and where their remains were discovered but also what they tell scientists today about how they lived and why they died out. Were Neanderthals brainy or brutish? Man or beast? When did language begin? The informal style never oversimplifies the gripping science and technology, and the authors raise as many questions as they answer in the detailed chapters, which cover each of the four fossils and the research and debate that surround them. The design is lackluster but readable, with clear type on thick paper and occasional full-color illustrations of sites, skeletons, and scientists at work. Meticulous source notes and bibliographies (including Web sites) at the end of each chapter will stimulate further research. Adults will want this, too. Grades 8-12. --Hazel Rochman

This is a very helpful book with good text and good illustrations.

I teach 6th grade Social Studies and really enjoy using this book when we are doing our Early Man unit. The language is well-suited for 6th graders without being dumbed down. Wish I could find similar for every unit we do!

This was on the NCSS notable list for young adults. I don't see many young adults being interested in the writing for very long. It was pretty dry. I would not have finished if it wasn't for a class and I am fascinated by the topic.

I bought this book for my 12-year-old son and he's loving it. It offers clear descriptions of the fossils, and exciting discussions of related topics, supported by solid anthropological evidence, and all pitched at a perfect level for a young scientist. It was very hard to find something about paleoanthro for a teenager, but this is perfect. Please write more like it!

very cool how bones change over years

Love it

Good source of factual info to supplement the dull and scant info of our social studies textbook. It's important to show kids what type of work scientist actually do - while getting dirty!

It was perfect

Sacred Shelter: Thirteen Journeys of Homelessness and Healing

Review

Both the Torah and the New Testament instruct, 'love your neighbor as yourself.' This book’s stories of suffering and redemption show how real people live that commandment. Susan Greenfield has compiled stories and reflections that inspire, uplift and challenge. Sacred Shelter shares lessons about the power of love and perseverance, and about how, when we extend respect, kindness and hope to people our society rejects and scorns, we take huge steps closer to a more just and love-filled world for everyone. (Brian Purnell, Geoffrey Canada Associate Professor of Africana Studies and History, Bowdoin College)It is rare that one book provides a gripping, honest, unapologetic look at the lives and perspectives of individuals experiencing homelessness. Sacred Shelter does just that demanding a reader's immediate attention. After bearing witness to the truths captured in this book I was moved to deepen my intention to fight for affordable housing across the nation. (Afua Atta-Mensah, Esq., Executive Director, Community Voices Heard)Homelessness is not hopelessness–at least for the 13 individuals whose stories are told in Sacred Shelter. Personal empowerment; supportive community; God’s gracious presence are highlighted as key to these success stories of transformation and growth. The editor sensitively and capably allows these individuals’ own reality and narrative to emerge through their stories. (Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York)A powerful look beyond statistics and policy proposals, into the stories of people who have experienced homelessness, in their own words. These painful, honest, and ultimately hopeful stories--paired with reflections from religious leaders--inspire the reader to greater empathy and commitment. (Rabbi Jill Jacobs, Executive Director, T'ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights)

In Sacred Shelter New York is the place where a community of resilient, remarkable individuals are yearning for a voice. Through frank, honest interviews, this book follows the lives of thirteen people who experienced homelessness and graduated from an interfaith life skills empowerment program. They share traumas from their youth, the devastation of homelessness, and the healing they discovered through community and faith. Interspersed among their stories are reflections from directors, clerics, and volunteers involved in the life skills program. In powerful narrative form, Sacred Shelter represents a demographic group that continues to endure systemic injustice and marginalization. By listening to individual stories, we are urged to confront our own woundedness and uncover our desire for human connection, a sacred shelter on the other side of suffering. For a Readers’ Guide to Sacred Shelter Visit https://fordham.bepress.com/soc/3/Susan Celia Greenfield, Professor of English at Fordham University, is author of Mothering Daughters: Novels and the Politics of Family Romance, and of many essays and short stories.

The book tells the life stories of people experiencing some form of lasting recovery from homelessness and who then committed to helping others in need. The hope is for the stories to offer a positive example to others in need, and to motivate readers to work for social justice and change. As such, the book is a powerful source of hope. With rising rents and house prices across the country, and homelessness on the rise, the book is a timely, compassionate, and hopeful read.

How many of us have seen people who are homeless and looked away, not knowing what to say or do? I often did. Then I saw a woman walking up the street approach someone who had all her belongings in a shopping cart. When she then passed by me, I asked her what she had said to the homeless woman. She answered, "I asked how I could help." SACRED SHELTER is a collection of life stories from 13 people who became homeless, from a corporate executive to someone neglected from birth. The stories transform them into vibrant human beings, with deep insights and feelings. This book is for everyone who cares about others, and who would like to know more about those who are homeless, and how we can actually make a difference in their lives. A favorite quote from "The Ways We Touch" by Miller Williams says it all: "Have compassion for everyone you meet, even if they don't want it. What seems conceit, bad manners, or cynicism is always a sign of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen. You do not know what wars are going on down there where the spirit meets the bone."

Scared Shelters consists of 13 powerful and amazing stories that these individuals overcame homelessness for different reasons. This book enlighten someone about different reasons why we can become homeless. It’s not just the lower class or the middle class becomes homeless but anyone can. The domestic violence story is gruesome and shows power and strength in this individual to make sure her children were protected and find a home for them. I encourage you to buy and read and share with friends and family.

This book consists of 13 interviews with people who were formerly homeless. The enormity of the pain each of these people have gone through is incalculable, but, through their own individual voices, the stories reveal how each has found his/her own unique strengths, made connections, developed relationships and created bonds of love. The book underscores the strengths – indeed the salvation – found in community. I fervently hope (believe) it will make anyone tempted to judge people they see on the street, to think twice and then - not do so. Because these stories are also extraordinary in making plain their larger backdrop: the mammoth structural forces working against vulnerable people’s forging even minimal successes out of their challenges. Among its through lines are a deep indictment of our society’s laissez faire stance when faced with the entrenchment of homelessness; its contents form a series of eloquent pleas to change that. The editor is a consummate interviewer. It is not easy to develop oral histories that do justice to the complexities of the lives of those interviewed, and this author knows well how to frame people’s unique stories and let them breathe on their own. Her profound respect, compassion, admiration and utter lack of condescension for the people whose life struggles form this book permeate every page, and it is a credit to her skills that we feel those things, too.

This book encourages anyone who is going through anything at any stage of their lives to have hope. It may appear that being homeless is the worst thing that any human being can go through and it is. However, these inspirational stories allow anyone who read this book to learn significant lessons in being persistent, letting go and letting God and most importantly, reaching back to help others now with a greater understanding. When you read it, keep a copy and pass another one along and let the stories of these thirteen individuals and the reflections from mentors teach that we are all our brother's keepers.

The thirteen people who offer their stories here share how they found insight, compassion, faith, and courage in the face of enormous struggle and loss. Each chapter is a deep lesson in what resilience looks like and the enormous power of community. By sharing the truth of their lives, the book's contributors movingly call each of us to commit to the fight for the fundamental and sacred right to shelter for all.

This book is not easy to read. The stories shared are difficult and often painful. You will emerge from this book changed and will see the world around you more compassionately.

If you want to understand the complex problem of homelessness you must read Susan Greenfield’s Sacred Shelter. This important book is essential reading both for its insightful introduction, which discusses the multiple issues of homelessness with astonishing clarity and depth, and for the powerful stories told by thirteen people who have experienced homelessness and are now living independently

Review

"One of the most ironic, intelligent, grimly funny voices to comment on life in present-day America . . . [White Noise] poses inescapable questions with consummate skill."--Jayne Anne Phillips, The New York Times Book Review"DeLillo's eighth novel should win him wide recognition as one of the best American noveslists. . . . the homey comedy of White Noise invites us into a world we're glad to enter. Then the sinister buzz of implication makes the book unforgettably disturbing."--Newsweek "A stunning book . . . it is a novel of hairline prophecy, showing a desolate and all-too-believable future in the evidence of an all-too-recognizable present. . . . Through tenderness, wit, and a powerful irony, DeLillo has made every aspect of White Noise a moving picture of a disquiet we seem to share more and more."--Los Angeles Times "It's brilliance is dark and sheathed. And probing. In White Noise, Don DeLillo takes a Geiger-counter reading of the American family, and comes up with ominous clicks."--Vanity Fair"A stunning performance from one of our most intelligent novelists . . . Tremendously funny."--The New Republic

I am a "lapsed humanities major" turned technological "knowledge worker." I have been trying to find brief and accessible novels to read that (despite their brevity and simplicity) still have some high literary quality, so that by squeezing such reading into my spare time, I can hopefully avoid turning into a uni-faceted number-crunching robot of a tech worker. This book was wonderful. It met all my criteria. It is a quick and enthralling read, and it stimulates deep thinking about the nature of family, career, life, culture, etc.I found parts of the book to be screamingly hilarious, but definitely in a dark-humor way.A notable fact: this book has the best DIALOGUE i ever recall reading in any novel. ever. The dialogue between husband and wife, and between other family members and characters, is both true-to-life (by being awkward, stumbling, flawed) and also just slightly hyper-real, just slightly over-the-top in its weighted, unspoken implications and tension. My fondness for this book continued to grow after I finished reading it. For several weeks afterward, I would find myself in real-life situations that reminded me of moments in the novel, and this deepened my appreciation for what an excellent job Delillo did in capturing the idiosyncrasies of modern life. Truth is stranger than fiction. Even the very strange fiction in White Noise. Here is the only thing that I *discourage* you from doing with regard to this book: please, please, please do *not* read the introduction. (If you receive the 25th anniversary edition that I received, there is a 10 page introduction by a separate author.)Reading the introduction inhibited my enjoyment of this book. The introduction is ridiculously academic. It cross-references this novel with Mephistopheles, Borges, and Gnosticism, and uses phrases like "brilliant palette of estrangement" and "fusing inimical styles into something sui generis." What? What the serious what? After getting bogged down in the intellectuality of the introduction, I spent the first several chapters of the book trying to relate any of Delillo's prose with *anything* mentioned in the introduction. It was an exhausting distraction. I finally detached myself from the introduction, and from then on I truly fell in love with this novel.

OK, so I came to this one kind of late, it was written way back in 1985 after all, quite a different world then, but I loved the spot-on irony and profuse dead-pan humor, the innocent sarcasm of DeLillo's beleaguered characters. I have always admired the author's diagnostic ability regarding American zeitgeist. Perhaps it budded here and bloomed with Underworld in 1997.The White Noise of the title refers of course to so much radio and TV chatter (waves and radiation), ubiquitous consumer ads and grocery products, and the general mishegas expounded and discussed by many of his characters; but the term is also offered as a conjecture for death. What is death like, wonder university professor Jack Gladney (who spearheads a department of Hitler studies) and his fourth wife Babbette (whose "fanatical blond mop" of hair and ample size give her "a certain seriousness"), could it all be nothing but a steady hiss of noise forever and ever? After an entire episode parodying a catastrophic massive chemical leak which is eventually dubbed The Airborne Toxic Event, DeLillo logically ties in the theme of thanatophobia (death anxiety), but subsequently throws in a few twists here and there, involving pharmaceuticals and German nuns. You can see flashes here of the author's later work as he seems often to: veer off topic, use non-sequitur and absurdist plot, yet with strong characterizations and interlacing motifs, satisfactorily link everything together in time for his ultimate scene.

That is the question posed but perhaps not answered.I was mesmerized by the language and completely charmed by the dialogue -- especially conversations between the protagonist (Jack) and his young son, Heinrich, who often enough seems to be the parent rather than the child.“It’s going to rain tonight,” says Heinrich in the car on the way to school.“It’s raining now,” says Jack.(Long descriptive paragraph about driving him to school in the rain).“Look at the windshield,” Jack says. “Is that rain or isn’t it?”“I’m only telling you what they said.”(Long descriptive paragraph on the unreliability of our senses).“Is it raining,” Jack says, “or isn’t it?”“I wouldn’t want to have to say.”“What if someone held a gun to your head?”“Who, you?”“Someone.”Long two sided satirical conversation between father and son on rain, truth, philosophy, sophistry, solar systems, the elusiveness of time, language as illusion, uncertainty and chaos, ending with:“I watched him walk through the downpour to the school entrance.”If you’ve ever raised a willful child (meaning hard-headed, smart and contrary), this conversation will ring true and hilarious. The children in this book are bright, watchful, intuitive, joyful and disarming. They reveal what the essence of life should be, I think, while the adults muddle their way in and out of their paranoid fear of death; they are the children -- afraid of the dark. This book is not exactly a romp, though it is very funny in parts. I loved it, not for its wisdom, not for its meditation on death or the answer to death – existentialism, but for the free exploration into the nature of modern society, the “white noise” and how that noise may ultimately distract us from our most important goal in life – to figure out what it’s all about.
