Deserves its status as a cult classic. I have used the book to teach photography; I believe David Pye's principles and ideas can be transported to other crafts with relative ease. It's a short, slender book, easy to read, but there's a lot of original thinking and many useful ideas in this book. I bought this reprint for a friend, and it's the fourth time I've bought the book over the years. Highly recommended for anyone interested in craft of any kind.

I originally purchased this book after hearing an experienced woodworker refer to the author's concepts as they applied to working with wood. I was not disappointed as the author takes the reader through a well thought out and cogent presentation. Definitely worth the read if you are a craftsman, educator or supervisor of craftsmen and want to articulate concepts of workmanship as pride, professionalism and artistic expression.

David Pye was not only a designer and craftsman, he was an eloquent wordsmith. This book is a must read for any craftsman, artist, designer, engineer, architect or person interested in how we view the designed and fabricated world around us and why we fabricate things in the ways that we do. I first read this book in 1977 and I'm glad to see that it is back in print. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

This book is written about craftsmanship but is relevant to anyone trying to escape the modern culture of homogeneity and coolness. This book has opened up the importance of warmth and a wieldable genuineness.

This book was recommended as a supplemental reading in a pottery course. The author of the book primarily worked with wood and there are many examples of furniture and turned wood objects in the book. The real value of this book is in articulating the aesthetics of hand made objects and what makes them special and wonderful as compared to machine made objects. It's an excellent read for anyone who makes things with their hands.

In good shape for it's age. The contents were worth every penny!

One to read for any craftsperson

Having read a review beforehand I knew it would, in the reviewer's terms, be somewhat abstruse. He was right. But it gets one thinking about their individual woodworking approach and style in a different context than just "measure twice, cut once."

Review

“A thrilling sci-fi adrenaline rush, with one of the most compelling and frightening visions of Earth’s future I’ve seen yet. I couldn’t put it down.” (Pittacus Lore, #1 New York Times bestselling author of I Am Number Four)“Wells creates a compelling, fantastically complex post-apocalyptic landscape, adding thought-provoking twists to a classic story of humanity creating its own doom...With broad cross-genre appeal and an engaging balance of thematic depth and rip-roaring action, this winner will leave readers clamoring for sequels.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“A dark, wild ride.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Readers who enjoy headstrong feminist leads making their way . . . in the not-too-distant future will find plenty to like in Partials.” (Los Angeles Times)“Mr. Wells has recombined familiar dystopian elements, added original ones and thrown in dashes of dry wit to create a sprawling, action-packed medical thriller full of big ideas and exciting reversals.” (Wall Street Journal)

From the Back Cover

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic-in-training, is on the front lines of this battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws have pushed what's left of humanity to the brink of civil war, and she's not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will find that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them—connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.Dan Wells, acclaimed author of I Am Not a Serial Killer, takes readers on a pulsepounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question—one where our humanity is both our greatest liability and our only hope for survival.

I have always been drawn to stories about how people survive widespread death and destruction--particularly when humans have brought these circumstances upon themselves. Partials delivers a disturbing future world reminiscent of the Terminator movies, where artificial intelligence goes awry and takes control. The plot definitely moved the story, whereas the characters could've been more developed. Kira was the only one I really connected with. Marcus seemed kind of bland, Samm was at least mysterious, and the girls I had a hard time keeping track of who was who. I didn't even feel like I was rooting for Madison's baby other than in some vague sort of way since saving her saved the human race. The pace was also a bit slow, especially slogging through the countryside. Additionally, the writing was good, and I plan to read the other books in the series.

I really enjoyed this book, the story of a young woman named Kira who is trying to cure the disease that is wiping out the human race. Stuck in an old city with the last of humanity, Kira and a group of friends attempt the unthinkable to save the next generation; to kidnap a Partial, a species of weapons that may path a way to a cure to the disease they realeased on the human race. But on the way, a much bigger mystery comes into play, and Kira is forced to face the frightening possibility of the past being a lie.As I said, I enjoyed the book, but it may be better not to invest in this series, as the two follow books are dreadful. This book was a fun book in the spirit of the Hunger Games, with a determined lead character and an interesting plot, but it all goes absolutely nowhere. Read it if your into having your expectations shattered...in the wrong way.

Partials is a very well-written dystopian story that doesn't insult the reader's intelligence, revolving around a post-apocalytpic future where newborns don't live more than a few hours and what is left of science and medicine must find a cure for a mysterious virus known as RM. So desperate are the powers that be that the mandatory pregnancy age is being lowered to 16 so that the remaining humans can hopefully produce one offspring that will live--or at least provide additional research. Sixteen is how old our protagonist is when the story opens; Kira is a talented nurse who has a daring vision of combatting the RM virus, one that involves dealing with the enemy, a frightening group of semi human androids known as Partials (created by man), who waged a war that almost wiped out the human race eleven years before. The action takes place in what was once New York City. The books starts off well, with sharp mysteries and plot development, all balanced with original dialog and characters. There's plenty of action and intrigue as Kira negotiates a tricky path to find her cure, and several ominous forces are at work, including some of her allies. The 'science' of the virus and of the Partials themselves is all well explained and believable. And, as mentioned, the scene setting is top-notch; the author knows what the world looks like after the apocalypse.Having said that, I found the novel losing steam about half way through, and I'm not sure why. Perhaps there are too many episodic treks back and forth across the blasted landscape of the future. Perhaps too many characters and sub-plots that cause the reader to lose focus (this reader anyway) as he or she juggles all that is happening. One odd habit the author has is that he almost never describes a character's physical traits so we have no idea what they look like. Strange as he goes to such lengths to paint the haunting world after 'The Break'. I think he may have drawn such an elaborate setup that he is constantly having to explain it rather than simply letting the story take its course. But Partials is head and shoulders above its peers and readers of dystopian lit won't be disappointed.

It was fascinating to travel across the ruins of America. I would recommend to anyone getting ready to read, that you will definitely want an Atlas of America so you can track Kira's progress. However, the many MANY different perspectives were extremely confusing. I would have been more than happy sticking with Marcus, Samm and Kira. The other characters voices/personality weren't as well established and often seemed unnecessary.***POSSIBLE SPOILERS***Unfortunately there were also many discrepancies and typos that often pulled me out of the partial world. Especially towards the end. I understand deadlines, but having your character pull out her only gun twice in the same page is just a little sloppy on the editors part. And the typos in the last few chapters alone were killing my English major heart -_- Also the discrepancy at the very end where the baby is supposed to be the "first" partial/human baby doesn't work out especially since Ariel had had a child (remember the opening sequence of book 1). And it was stated again from Ariel's perspective that she had gotten pregnant as soon as she could to get away from her guardian. Something just isn't aligning there. Also I couldn't have been more disappointed with the chemistry between Samm and Kira. It almost felt like their love interest was forced just because love is something that's "supposed" to be in YA. And their final kiss was over so quickly that it was just disappointing. I mean we got more details and felt more when Samm kissed someone else.. I would have rather been shown not told that it was "perfect unity".. Waste of a kiss if you ask me.

I am a technical writer and editor with eight years of experience, and I regret that I did not read this book when I first started my career. When people ask me about getting started in technical documentation, I recommend this book to them. The main sections of the book provide guidelines on writing documentation that is easy to use, easy to understand, and easy to find. The book definitely follows these concepts, which helps when I reference it for developing content, editing content, or determining the best style guidelines for the documentation teams that I work with. This book has been so invaluable that I have a paperback at home, a paperback in the office, and a Kindle edition that I can reference from my mobile devices. It is full of so much useful information, I reread sections periodically to refresh myself on the guidelines in that section. Whether you are new or experienced in technical documentation, I highly recommend this book to you.

This is a great technical writing book for both new and mid-career tech writers. The information is well-organized in such a way that it can be used as a great reference book. There are many helpful diagrams and checklists in the book, and I have appreciated them immensely.

I am a neophyte technical writer, but experienced in grammar and composition. Having only read the first few chapters, I have already learned several theoretical and practical points that I have been able to apply. This is my first book on the subject, so I can't say it's the best, but I can highly recommend it. I would buy this book again.

Good guide

The one guide every technical writer must have.

Fantastic information for writing help manuals and similar technical documents.

This is a good book. Good content. Very helpful.

This was required for my Technical Writing class in college. Highly recommend.

This is the second and last "dummies" book that I have purchased. In both instances it was for software that I use in my job. So far anytime I got stuck or had a problem and tried to use these books as resources I cannot find any answers. In fact this actually added to my confusion!! They may work for some people but I have to give the book(s) an "F".

I'm very new to PL/SQL. My experience so far has been with MySQL. This book has a lot of great info and it's for beginners as well as people that know some basics. I'm working on a certification for Oracle (programming with PL/SQL) and decided to start with this book before moving onto the more advanced stuff. I recommend it!

I felt like I received a good introduction to the basics of PL/SQL from this book. However, I purchased the Kindle version (for iPad) and the formatting needs to be corrected. The code examples in the book were very difficult to read and follow because of the formatting. Once I replicated the examples on my computer, they were much easier to read.

I am very pleased w/ the purchase of the book. If your goal is to learn PL/SQL quickly and comprehensively, this is the book to buy. It covers all the fundamentals you need to know about PL/SQL and it is excellently written. I have been a developer for 20 years in many languages. Learning new languages from overly technical books and writters, I find, often times make your learning process slow and ineffective. I took this class at Oracle, but there were topics that the training manual and the instructor did not do a good job presenting. This book clarified many of the topics I that were presented in class in a simpler, clearer, and more effective manner. I highly recommend it.

This is a great book for beginners. I give it only 4 stars because it does not have examples to practice. In my opinion you definitely have to know SQL better prior to using this book. For hard-heads like me :) it was helpful to understand the concepts and the programming Syntax in a easier way without losing in several lines of text. However I used this book along with the free online material and had practicing on Oracle installed in my PC and trying out the examples/scenarios that I created myself.I am glad I used this book and would recommend any one to start with this for beginners and move on to books with more advanced concepts.

Obviously a bit dated, but that is clearly noted. I found the book helped me in my PL/SQL class. That's what I wanted, that's what I got.

I haven't had to use pl/sql for about 10 years. I wanted a book to help me through relearning PL/sql. This wasn't it.
