Barbara Brown Taylor is an Episcopal priest. She holds the Harry R. Butman Chair in Religion and Philosophy at Piedmont College in northeastern Georgia and serves as adjunct professor of Christian spirituality at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur. I ordered this book for a discussion at our church and I am so glad to have been able to participate. This book consists of 5 chapters in which this author, an Episcopal priest, introduces the reader to quantum physics, black holes, quarks, string theory, chaos theory and the Big Bang theory. The chapters were written in a way that non scientists can understand. She supposes a God who is bigger than our universe and was able to set the Creation in motion, sit back and watch the world develop. It is difficult to look at the beautiful math of the universe and not believe that a loving hand guides it all.

Have you ever finished a labor of love, one in which, almost inexplicably, you enjoy every step? I have to wonder if that was as much the author's experience as reading this book was for me.Thoughtful, important questions abound. Observations and reflections from the scientific and religious communities seem to have been chosen not only for their heft but also for the quality of their articulation. The reader is likely to be drawn into the conversation - not as observer but as partner, as a co-curator of what we are learning and yet about to discover from the dance between science and religion.

This was a life changing book for me. Barbara Brown Taylor helped me to see the profound spirituality behind Chaos Theory. And she helped me see that "Chaos Theory" is a misnomer. The theory is not about chaos anymore than it is about an underlying pattern in the universe. Chaos Theory says that we can't have "chaos" without an underlying pattern and vice versa. More importantly, Chaos Theory, echoes the insights of mysticism--that everything is connected to everything else and that seemingly insignificant decisions can have a profound income on the final outcome of events.As many others have noted, Barbara Brown Taylor's wordsmithing is in a class of its own. Her most eloquent turns of phrase urge the reader to read and re-read many passages over and over again.Barbara Brown Taylor persuades the reader that there is in deed mysticism in the New Science, Chaos Theory included.Instead of the mechanistic universe that Newton envisioned, at the quantum level, the universe looks like a "luminous web," in which everything is connected to everything else. I am a retired biomedical research scientist. Over the last three years I participated in a unique program called Science for Ministry at the Princeton Theological Seminary (PTS). This program was funded by a large grant from The John Templeton Foundation. During the course of the program I participated in almost a dozen mini-courses on topics related to science and theology. The courses were taught by both PTS faculty and guest lecturers. Participants were ordained pastors and scientists from their congregations, and others with training in either ministry, theology, or science and in some case all of those fields of study. It was an outstanding visionary program. As a participant I was assigned many books to read, given dozens more books, and heard recommendations and citations on many other relevant books. One book I stumbled upon was Barbara Brown Taylor's, The Luminous Web. Barbara Brown Taylor is known widely for her beautiful and insightful sermons and books on faith and religion. She has been ranked as one of the 12 most effective preachers in the country. As an ordained Episcopal priest she served for many years as a church pastor in Atlanta, Georgia. She currently holds the Harry R. Butman Chair in Religion and Philosophy at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. Barbara Brown Taylor has no formal training in science, but she has a wide circle of friends that includes some of the best minds in the sciences. As a scientist with a long standing interest in the conversation between science and religion I can say without reservation that Barbara Brown Taylor "gets it." The Luminous Web is an excellent place to get a broad introduction to all of the most interesting topics in the science and theology dialogue. She is elegant and insightful. I have developed and taught my own course in science and theology within my own faith community, and anyone who asks me for a recommendation to a good book to get started thinking about this faith-expanding conversation, I will point them to Barbara Brown Taylor's, The Luminous Web. I have not found a better more concise primer on science and theology. Highly Recommended.

I have yet to read a book by Barbara Brown Taylor that I would give less than five stars. Since my first encounter with her writing when I was a seminary student in the 80s through her book The Preaching Life, I have been a fan of this fine thinker and writer. She is an outstanding story teller who uses this well developed gift to exquisitely connect a life of faith and spiritual awareness to the experiences of daily life without the weight of dogma. An illumined mind which graciously offers her insights to the reader. This book subtly and wisely suggests that Science and Faith are not only compatible, but are inseparable. BBT leads the reader to grasp that each discipline informs and is made richer by the other and we become more aware that the sum of Science and Faith provides a richness beyond any notion of either/or..

I loved this story. While there were multiple elements of Pride and Prejudice, I enjoyed the modern twist that brought up very important issues. Our experiences and circumstances shape us in a way, whether we are trying to fit into our environment or trying to purposely stand apart from it. While we may share parts of our cultural identity with others, that doesn't always make us the same. This book took on thoughts around cultural identity, socioeconomic status, and what we think it means to be black, rich, etc. How we judge whether someone is enough, or whether they meet our standard of a cultural identity. There is also this underlying idea of accepting and being proud of who you are, but also not being afraid of change that is inevitable.Another topic I thought was beautifully handdled was the many facets of gentrification. This is a real and relevant issue, because many of us disregard what is different, or history that may not include us, yet is still so important. We tend to just want to improve things the way we think they should be improved (which is not always the best for everyone else).Which leads me to one of my favorite parts of this book, the family dynamics of the Benitez's. They celebrate their culture identity, and the history of their neighborhood. They treat neighbors as family, and truly care about others. They support each other in such a beautiful way. Honestly, the connection is just inspiring. I would definitely recommend this book!

It’s hard for me to rate this novel because I don’t think I’m the target demographic. However being the Janeite, that I am, with a lifelong obsession with P&P, this novel made me realize some things about Lizzy that I never had before. Zuri, isn’t the most instantly likeable character in the world- she’s bossy, a knowitall, incredibly judgmental and closed-minded, unwilling to try new things, in a way that Jane Austen never quite revealed about Elizabeth Bennet. The family, the Benitez’s is just as cringey, as the Bennett’s and overall, this is pretty accurately a YAF urban, adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.The writing of this is done in Zuri’s voice and so even when she’s being obnoxious, you get to go on the journey through the book with her. Zuri rides hard for Brooklyn and so as readers, this reads as a love letter to Brooklyn and not just Brooklyn in general, the particular section of Brooklyn where ZZ and her family are from. Zuri is somewhat of a poet, so there are a lot of poetry breaks within this novel, as poetry seems to be how the main character processes her thoughts and emotions and the poems are overall pretty good.The themes of this novel go beyond class and prejudice and perceptions and preconceived notions to address the issue of gentrification of traditionally ethnic neighborhoods and how that affects the people who live there. Another major issue in this novel is race and racial relations between black people of different socioeconomic statuses and to a lesser extent between black and white people. I think there are some pretty heavy topics covered in what is basically a YA love story that make it pretty essential reading for young people of all races in contemporary America.This was a slow starter for me as a novel. Whilst I could readily recognize the plot trajectory and characters, I found them all universally bland for the first third of the book and would have given this maybe two stars. However, I’m glad I stuck with this long enough to discover what was actually a pretty enjoyable read. It wasn’t excellent by any means, but it was at least a 3.5-star read overall and possibly even 4-stars if someone is actually in the YA demographic.

Perhaps the most famous so far is Anne Tyler's VINEGAR GIRL her take on THE TAMING OF THE SHREW.Zoboi sets her version in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn where Yuppies are changing the familiar landscape. The protagonist is Zuri Benitez who lives with her four sisters in an apartment across from a remodeled mini-mansion. A twist on our expectations is that an upper class black family is moving in, and the two boys are really handsome. Her sister, Janae, falls for Ainsley right away. Darius Darcy acts like he's too good for the girls.So . . . we know what to expect. Zuri is Elizabeth Bennett and she will eventually fall for Darius, who unbeknownst to us already likes her. She finds out for sure when they both make a college visit, she at Howard, him at Georgetown in Washington DC. His sister Gigi also goes to boarding school in Washington DC, a minor plot device. He compliments her on a poem she reads at a college hangout when she notices him in the audience.Zuri is a proud black American, and she's not about to fall for some boy just because he's rich and good-looking, and she's deeply offended when one of Darius's relatives implies exactly that. Zoboi overdoes this aspect of Zuri's personality. A boy from the projects, with whom she goes on a “not a date” says he's always wanted to “get with” one of the fat a**sed Benitez girls, and she doesn't hand him his head. It's unusual that Zuri is so touchy since Janae, the oldest, doesn't do that at all, nor do her little sisters who are just as boy crazy as a Valley girl. This could be necessary, however, as Elizabeth Bennett was notably head strong.I liked the fact that the Darcy boys were black and were still considered Yuppi invaders. We know that's the case in some black circles where a lighter shade of skin puts a person higher on the hierarchy or desirability. It's never adequately explained why the Darcy parents picked Bushwick as their new home. They had lived in a smaller house so perhaps it was a matter of affordability. The grandmother, however, lives in what sounds like an even bigger mansion.It's rather hard to keep the character's straight. One of the sisters is away at Duke, and there's also the owner of the apartment, Madrina, who teaches Zuri what sounds like voodoo. There are, after all, originally from Haiti. Zuri also has a sister named Marisol. I still don't know where she fits in the family.

Now I’ll erase the parts of Bethany’s life story that make her a good person, thereby turning her into my evil minion. Then, together, we’ll invade the nonfictional world and rule everything!” “Let her go!” Owen shouted. “Or you won’t like what comes next.” The evil King of All Stories sneered. “You? The nonfictional hero who’s saved the fictional world more times than I can count? You have no power here, boy.” “Don’t I?” Owen took out paper and a pencil and began writing. The King of All Stories drops his eraser. The king’s eraser immediately dropped out of his hand. “What?” the king shouted in amazement. “But how?” “Through the power of words!” Owen shouted. “Books are magical, and so is writing!” He wrote something else on the paper. The King of All Stories lets Bethany go, then trips on his own feet. The king let go of Bethany, then spectacularly wiped out on his next step, doing a front flip before landing hard on his back. The Crown of Stories fell off his head and rolled a few feet away. The Crown of Stories appears on Owen’s head, Owen wrote. Immediately, the crown disappeared from the ground, then reappeared on Owen’s head. It was exactly the right size, as if it were made for him all along. “No!” the former king shouted from the ground. “You can’t do this to me. This is all I had!” “Not true,” Owen said, turning to his former archenemy. “This isn’t you, Your Majesty. You’re not meant to be evil. Someone’s rewritten your story, just as you tried to do for Bethany.” “I’m not?” the former king said. “Then what was I meant to be?” “A father,” Owen said quietly, then wrote something on his paper. The former King of All Stories turns back into his real self. Instantly a bright light filled the room, then spread out over the entire Kingdom of Stories, blinding anyone who happened to be looking at the castle at that moment. The light enveloped the former king, raising him into the air in a completely awesome way. The light became too bright to look at, and they all covered their eyes except Owen, who wrote himself sunglasses that made him look even cooler. Then abruptly, the light disappeared and everything went dark. “Looks like this story,” Owen said, pulling off his sunglasses, “just started a new chapter.” Bethany slowly stepped past Owen, her eyes on the figure on the ground. The former king was no longer dressed in royal robes. Now he wore normal clothes, and his hair had turned the same shade as Bethany’s, a bronzish red. The man shook his head, then slowly pushed to his feet, his mouth hanging open. “. . . Bethany?” he said, his eyes widening. “Dad?” she said, not believing it. “It’s me, Beth,” her dad said, holding out his arms. “You’ve saved me! I never thought I’d be able to turn back to my true self, but you’ve done it!” Bethany ran forward and jumped into her dad’s arms, knocking them both to the ground. “Dad!” she shouted. “I can’t believe it’s you! Owen, you did it!” “I’ve never seen anything so sweet,” Kiel said from Owen’s side, rubbing his eyes. “I have,” Charm said, looking at Owen as her hand slipped into his.   •  •  •   The white paw of a black cat touched Owen’s hand, and he stopped writing. Spike, Owen’s fictional self’s former cat, glanced up at Owen from his desk with a look that said, Really? “Too much?” Owen asked his fictional cat. Spike just blinked his eyes slowly, leaving his paw on Owen’s hand. “I have,” Charm said, looking at Owen with affection. Spike dug his claws into Owen’s hand, and Owen sighed. “Fine.” “Really?” Charm said, stepping away from the other two. “No one else thinks this is a trap? I’m the only one?” Spike took his paw off of Owen’s hand and began to purr contentedly as he closed his eyes to nap again. “You know, I’m the one who’s writing this,” Owen said. “And it’s not exactly easy. Maybe at least hold your judgment until it’s done?” Spike briefly opened his eyes, then closed them again, completely unmoved. Owen absently scratched his cat’s stomach, reading over what he had written. Ugh. Why was it all so bad? Did every writer have this problem? Everything just seemed so . . . obvious. Make the villain Bethany’s dad? It’d been done a thousand times. He began to idly tap the keys without pressing them while he stared off into space. When he glanced back at the computer, though, there were new words. Apparently he’d been typing without realizing it? “Owen,” said a man who appeared out of nowhere, with no features or details anywhere on his body. The mannequin-looking man had his back to the Owen in the story as he spoke to the real Owen. “Stop this at once. You’re manipulating fictional characters’ lives. Do you have any idea what you’re doing here?” Owen’s eyes widened as he read the lines, while at his side, Spike began to growl, low and menacing. Owen hadn’t just written those words . . . had he? And then more text appeared on the screen, without Owen even moving his hands. “Do not write again,” Nobody said. “I don’t want to have to tell you this twice.” And with that, he disappeared. A chill went through Owen, and he quickly reread the last few lines. What had just happened? Was that really Nobody? And if so, was Owen actually messing with real fictional people’s lives? Had he just created another fictional Owen? He quickly highlighted the entire story, ready to hit the delete button, then froze. What if he had created new people, and was now going to delete them? Would that take them out of existence somehow? His finger hovered over the button as he looked to Spike for an answer. But now that Nobody was gone, the cat seemed to have returned to his nap, not paying any attention. Should he delete the story, or was that worse? If only there was someone he could ask— “OWEN!” shouted someone from mere inches away. Owen screamed and tumbled out of his chair, while Spike tore away across the room, hiding under the bed. His heart racing, Owen turned to find Bethany’s head sticking out of a piece of paper on his desk, and he gave her the dirtiest look he could. “Don’t do that! You scared me half to death!” She’d given him a page from a book she kept hidden under her bed. In case of emergencies (fictional characters escaping their books, libraries burning down, that kind of thing) she could jump in one page, move to the next part of the story, then pop out of his. But it was not meant for terrifying him! “Good, you should be scared!” she said, breathing heavily. “Because that guy is back on the street again, the one who keeps watching my house!” Owen groaned loudly. “Seriously? This again?” “Oh, is my being stalked by a crazy person boring to you?” Bethany asked, giving him a sarcastic look. “Get over here and help me spy on him!” She moved her head to the side, and one hand popped out of the page. Owen shook his head. “No way. Remember what happened last time I came over to check on this guy?” Bethany rolled her eyes. “He wasn’t there, but only because he must have seen us coming!” “And the time before that?” “That one, I got the car wrong.” “And we terrified that poor old lady!” “Then she shouldn’t be acting so suspiciously!” Bethany yelled, her hand flying around wildly. “Who sits in their car for ten minutes at eleven at night?” “She couldn’t get it started!” “That’s what she wanted us to think,” Bethany said, glancing around suspiciously. “Hurry up, or he might leave again!” “Which would mean he’s not actually spying on you,” Owen said, sighing. “Bethany, it’s been a while since we jumped into a book—” “Two months, three weeks, and four days, actually. Now come on—” “And I know it’s been hard on you. But you’re kind of acting . . . different now.” Bethany’s face froze, and she pulled her hand back into the page. “What? What are you talking about? Don’t you get it? This could be Doyle, or Fowen again. Maybe Fowen got out of the book where I left him and is back for revenge. Or maybe Doyle remembered everything that happened and wants to figure out how I jump into books. If Kiel were here instead of running off to find out who he is without magic, he could just cast a spell or something to find out who this guy is. But without him, we’re going to need a good plan.” Owen groaned again. “No more mysteries. Please? Fowen and Doyle are both still in the fictional world where we left them. And whoever’s parked outside your house is probably one of your neighbors, which would explain why he’s on your street.” “You think I’m making this up, don’t you?” Bethany said, looking suspicious. “Not . . . entirely. I just think you used to jump into books every night, and now, well, your imagination doesn’t have as much to play with, so it’s messing with you.” She gave him an evil look and started to say something, then stopped, shaking her head. “Maybe you’re right. I might have a little bit of cabin fever or something. I’ll just go to bed and forget all this. See you tomorrow?” “Yeah, of course,” Owen said, breathing a sigh of relief. He’d been worried about saying something for weeks now, but she’d been getting more and more frantic to find something exciting in their fairly boring lives, and it was out of control. “And Bethany? Only use that page for emergencies. I might not have clothes on or something!” Bethany rolled her eyes, then waved good-bye and disappeared. Owen slowly got back into his chair, and Spike came trotting out from under the bed, then jumped into his lap. He petted his cat for a moment, then sighed. “Bethany’s going after the guy in the car, isn’t she.” Spike just purred in response. “Fine,” Owen said, and set Spike on his bed. “I’ll go, but this guy better be a murderer or something, or I’m going to be really annoyed!”

Book 3 of a riveting magical series with a refreshing spin. You really bond with both the characters and the "author." Never a dull moment, and a laugh a page.

My son and I are really enjoying this series. The only bad thing is you can't put the book down because it's so engaging, then the author leaves you on a cliff for an entire year while you wait for the next book to be written. It's still questionable whether good triumphs over evil, or if we'll have read 5 books before we find out the morals are questionable. Personally, when you are writing kids books, in my opinion they need to end with a good moral. We're waiting to see what happens here. For sure, I'll be buying the next two books to find out. For now all I can say is write faster, Man!

It was a good read. It kept me interested and wanting to read. I was not a big fan of the ending. Can't wait for the next one. I recommend this book to everyone. Hope you enjoy it like I did.

My daughter, 11 years, loves this series. She just had to have them all. She says that they do bounce around in the story and it requires her to really pay attention and sometimes re-read some chapters. She still loves each book.

My son loves these books. He's read the first one three times within the first week of owning them. The premise of the story is actually really good and they are well written. Such a happy Mom to see my boy happily reading.

My granddaughter was thrilled. She loved the series.

James Riley is very talented.The story thieves books kept my attention throughout.
