This is a self-help book on how to positively resolve the intractable differences that sometimes arise in our relationships, whether it is with family or friends or on the job. There is even a section on how to help resolve the differences between other people. As with Dr. Lieberman’s other books, this one consists of a series of short sections covering various types of interpersonal situations with suggested steps to bring them under control. Although the sections are no longer than in the other books, they seem to be more to the point somehow. Perhaps because the focus is narrower. Many of the suggested steps for the various types of disagreements are similar or exactly the same, but a lot of this is because the causes are often similar despite the differences in the situations. Some of the frequently suggested steps for resolving conflicts include apologizing, demonstrating respect, showing regret and pain, and asking for forgiveness. You will rarely make much headway in ending a conflict if you insist that you are totally in the right and that the other person must yield to your control.Additionally, he includes a better definition of respect, self-respect, and self-esteem than I have seen anywhere else. This book is good enough thatI may just keep it. After all, who doesn’t occasionally need to be able to resolve their conflicts with other people?

The advice given here will work with people who are unintelligent but basically decent. It can backfire badly with genuinely evil or cognitively defective people. The title overpromises; the author admits that nothing can work with unreasonable people.

This book has an ambitious title, and while I have some level of skepticism after reading it that the hype was actually answered in the 200-some pages that follow the cover, the book has numerous tricks and tips that will help you uncover the truth, or at least probably identify the liar in your midst.Teaching and espousing techniques such as reading body language, deliberate trust techniques, neuro-lingustic programming, confusing statements, counter-lies and other methods I would imagine that would seen more often on CSI and CIA than in business or a relationship, the book will arm the reader with many tips, tricks and techniques for uncovering the liar. The one challenge the book leaves for the reader to figure out, however, is what to do when the truth comes out. Many of the techniques have a definite deceptive approach that, once exercised, will likely poison the well of any future relationship with the subject - whether the subject is lying or not.An interesting book with lots of valuable insights, just be judicous with the application of the techniques.

The legendary leader in human behavior, Dr. David J. Lieberman, shows you how to protect yourself and your loved ones, emotionally, financially, and physically from unstable individuals who will inevitably pass through your life.He has personally trained the military, FBI, and mental health professionals around the world on how to eliminate the guess-work, and learn--in person, online, or even over the phone--virtually fool-proof tactics to find out if a person is normal, neurotic, or something far more dangerous

If you want simplistic solutions to complex relationship problems, then perhaps you will like this book. David Lieberman has great knowledge, but he seems to feel that 1 or 2 page solutions to major problems will satisfy his audience and actually achieve lasting results. Perhaps they do for some people, but I ended every brief chapter with a scratch of the head and a "yes, but..."

David Lieberman has written a practical book that gets down to the bottomo of addressing many personal conflicts. He understands that the real issue is Self-esteem. When a person feels his or her self-esteem threatened, conflict emerges. When a person's self-esteem is protected, conflict is lessened or resolved. The first three chapters, though short, are worth the purchase price of the book. One interesting quotation, typical of the first few chapters, reads as follows: "The barometer that determines how annoyed, frustrated, or angered we become with others in any given situation is based on the degree to which we feel in control of ourselves and our lives. Our respect for ourselves, in short, determines (a) the amount of respect we crave from others and (b) our need to push for control and dominance." Lieberman offers some very practical advice to help readers address a variety of conflict situations, providing simple but effective illustrations from real life examples. As a seasoned pastor (over 25 years in the ministry) who has been involved in all sorts of conflict situations, I have deduced a number of principles (explained clearly by Lieberman) over the years the hard way, through the school of hard knocks. Wish this book was around years earlier. On the negative side, the author makes unrealistic promises in some of the chapter's sub-titles, and even the title of the book is somewhat deceptive, "Make Peace with Anyone." Yet, in the text itself, the author clearly states that some situations have no real solutions. The book would be better if it did not promise complete success in all situations. I also have a few ethical problems with the book. Lieberman, in some instances, advocates lying. Then, in the last chapter, he claims that the Bible advocates lying to end conflict, an assertion I challenge. Relathionships that cannot espouse truth are not worth maintaining. Addtionally, when one discovers that another has lied, a greater conflict can emerge. Lieberman also encourages saying nice things about the offended person to a third party so that it gets back around. That just doesn't sit well with me. On the other hand, people do need to feel listened to and respected, and Lieberman shines in that department. It is great to ask others for advice, and that seems a more legitimate measure to show the offended party that we do indeed respect them (unless we in fact do not!). He also claims that the Bible teaches Aaron was more popular than Moses because Aaron counseled couples separately when they were having marriage problems (p.108). I have never seen anything even resembling that in Scripture; perhps he confuses the Bible with Talmudic Jewish tradition. Although Lieberman constantly reinforces his warning not to use these techniques to manipulate others or out of insincere motives, no doubt some will try. But that is not the author's fault: he seems to have a truly humble attitude; those who thusly abuse his advice will find that insincere application of his techniques will backfire. Nobody likes a weasely person. Despite its flaws, the author has great insights into the realities of human nature. A very helpful book that cuts to the core of the matter.

This book has a lot of examples which are very helpful. However the explanation of the examples are very confusing. Tough book to follow and even tougher class to enjoy unless you have a love and passion for accounting. If you do then this book is great, if not your in a heap of trouble.

That book helped me a lot for my managerial accounting class. This book is going straight to the point with some really neat and clear explanation on every subjects. It has some good sets of problem to help understand and practice the principles taught in each chapters with detailed solutions. The book for the class cost me almost a $100 and is a load of crap ( Cornerstone of cost management). If you`re taking managerial get this ebook to help you. Worth it ($9 geez... LOL)

This is an extremely well thought-out and crafted book designed to maximize the learning of Managerial Accounting.Every example and question seems to have been carefully designed with the defined objective of teaching Managerial Accounting as efficiently and intelligently as possible. You will find most Managerial Accounting concepts covered and perhaps explained better than your Managerial Accounting textbook.I also have a 800 page Managerial Accounting textbook and I think I learned more relevant ideas on Managerial Accounting from this 350 page book.Just like all Schaum's outlines, this book has mutiple problems and solutions at the end of each chapter. Additionally, there are "examinations" after end of each few chapters. This book covers the following:1)Cost classificiations2)CVP and Break Even Analysis.3)Budgeting4)Standard Costs, Responsibility Accounting, and Cost Allocation5)Performance Evaluation, Transfer Pricing, and Decentralization6)Capital Budgeting7)Quantitiave appraoches (weak)8)Financial Statement Analysis9)Product costing methods10)ABC, JIT, TQMThe main weakness of this book is that it does not cover using MS Excel for Managerial Accounting. MS Excel is used quite extensively by cost accountants and Financial Analysts, especially for Capital Budgeting.

Managerial and cost accounting are basically the same and you could use this book for your cost accounting class as well. It covers many of the topics that you would find for that class. You could use this as a self study textbook if you wanted to learn managerial accounting independently.

Its so interesting I'm reading it a second time!

You cannot buy this book and decide to read it end to end to understand the intricacies of managerial accounting. For that you would need the online portion that covers...only a slice of the details per chapter. So wait, for the chapter questions you would need an answer bank that isn't online. Maybe your instructor can fish that out for you. Maybe. What a rotten and forgettable book forever to be enshrined in the halls of loathsome learning. It is complex for complexities' sake.

not so good

I personally find this to be the reference book for most of my class needs

The Three Theban Plays: Antigone; Oedipus the King; Oedipus at Colonus, by Sophocles

Amazon.com Review

Aristotle called "Oedipus The King," the second-written of the three Theban plays written by Sophocles, the masterpiece of the whole of Greek theater. Today, nearly 2,500 years after Sophocles wrote, scholars and audiences still consider it one of the most powerful dramatic works ever made. Freud sure did. The three plays--"Antigone," "Oedipus the King," and "Oedipus at Colonus"--are not strictly a trilogy, but all are based on the Theban myths that were old even in Sophocles' time. This particular edition was rendered by Robert Fagles, perhaps the best translator of the Greek classics into English.

One needn’t be educated in the Greek classics to know that somewhere in this trilogy there is a man who gets intimate with his mom. However, the common conception of Oedipus —as in the Oedipal Complex—probably has more to do with Freud and Freudian psychoanalysis than it does with this story. The three plays of this trilogy are “Oedipus the King” [a.k.a. “Oedipus Rex” or “Oedipus Tyrannus”], “Oedipus at Colonus,” and “Antigone” [pronounced “an-tig-o-nee” rather than “anti-gone.”] Of the three plays, the first is the most well-known.In “Oedipus the King,” the titular character is facing a crisis in his kingdom. When the oracles are consulted about how the calamity might be brought to an end, Oedipus is told that he must banish the killer of his predecessor, i.e. the previous king of Thebes. Oedipus consults his own oracle to find out who the ne’er-do-well is who murdered the last king, and the fortune-teller tells Oedipus that he’ll never say who committed the killing —but acknowledges that he does know who it was. Oedipus mocks and threatens the oracle until the fortune-teller gets fed up and tells the king that it was he, Oedipus, who killed his predecessor. Oedipus doesn’t believe it at first, thinking it’s an attempt to facilitate a coup. Far ickier than the accusation of murder is the fact that —if true— it means that Oedipus has been getting busy with his own mother and has even sired children with her. Oedipus calls for an investigation. When a peasant who saw everything is called to testify, his story strikes Oedipus as disturbingly familiar. It turns out that Oedipus’s blood father (the previous king) had been told by his own oracle that his son would kill him and steal his wife, and so he had baby Oedipus sent away to die. Oedipus (who had been rescued from being staked up on a mountain) was coming through Thebes, not knowing it was his homeland, when he had a skirmish on the road with the man that he didn’t realize was both the king and his father. Later, Oedipus marries the queen (apparently there were no busts or portrait paintings of the last king anywhere) and becomes the king without knowing that the man he’d killed in self-defense was the last king / his father. When the truth revealed, everything goes south. The queen kills herself, and Oedipus’s response is almost as severe. Oedipus gouges out his own eyes and goes into exile. Antigone, one of Oedipus’s daughters, says she will be the ex-king’s guide, and because the old man is blind and not familiar with where he’s going, he doesn’t have much choice but to accept. In “Oedipus at Colonus,” Oedipus and Antigone arrive at neighborhood on the fringes of Athens, i.e. Colonus, and are planning to take up residency. The locals are welcoming until they find out the blind man is Oedipus. The story of the ex-king who killed his father and got it on with his mother has spread far and wide. The townspeople agree to call in their king, Theseus, and let him decide. Theseus decides to shelter the Thebean ex-king, being moved by his story of how Oedipus was unwittingly ruined and how the former king accepted his punishment when his offenses were brought to light. Theseus’s support becomes more complicated when Creon, a royal from Thebes, shows up and says they need Oedipus back because an oracle now says that the location of his burial will determine the outcome of a future conflict. Oedipus says no way, and Creon has Antigone and her sister (who joined them at Colonus to warn Oedipus) kidnapped. Theseus faces a serious challenge because now his actions might bring the city-state to war, let alone offending the gods. However, he sticks to his guns and rescues the daughters and agrees to personally oversee Oedipus’s burial (so that no one can grave-rob and move Oedipus’s body to a position that would create a more pleasing forecast from the oracles.)“Antigone” takes place after the death of Oedipus. The dutiful Antigone is now back in Thebes. When her brother Polyneices is killed and Creon orders that the prince not be buried, Antigone refuses to accept the decree. She steals the body and gives it a proper burial. Antigone was engaged to marry Creon’s son, Haemon, but Creon decrees that the woman will be imprisoned in a cave for disobedience of the king’s order. Haemon asks his father to be reasonable, but Creon will have none of it. Eventually, the words of an oracle convince Creon to change his mind, but he finds himself too late. Like Oedipus, various ruin then befalls Creon. While the details of the story may strain credulity in places, these works are powerful morality tales. The recurring theme is that one can’t make an end-run around fate by way of vice and neither can one otherwise manhandle events to achieve a desirable outcome. Oedipus’s father sends his son to be killed, but the outcome remains the same. Creon can’t plant Oedipus’s corpse where he pleases and neither can he deny a man proper burial. It’s almost a karmic tale. Perhaps, the path to pleasing the gods is through virtue, and not through finagling one’s way to compliance with forecasts.I find it fascinating how crucial a role is played by oracles throughout the three plays—and what that says about human nature. The fortune-tellers are always right and are always heeded. In a sense, this story tells one about humanity’s fear of uncertainty, what people are willing to do to allay that fear, and how the world is ultimately too complex for those attempts to work out. The law of unintended consequences remains ever present.I enjoyed these plays. They are brief, stirring, readable, and thought-provoking. I would recommend them for any reader—particularly those interested in the classics.

There’s a pattern with many of these Greek tragedies. Through the sad tales of cursed families, they illustrate the evolution of Western civilization. Fifth-century Athens was a light in the dark, a young democracy, and the Athenians used tragedy as a tool to preserve history, learn from it, and document their growth. With The Oresteia, we saw Aeschylus tackle the ideas of law and respect for the state, and Sophocles continues along those lines, but places the focus on another great philosophical problem–free will vs. fate.Though heady, the plays also had an entertainment value. The Spring festival celebrating Dionysus provided an opportunity for playwrights such as Sophocles to compete and put on a performance for thousands of spectators. Tragedies usually ran in the morning and the more lighthearted comedies toward the end of the day.Being tragedies, lighthearted these three Theban plays are not. They adhere to the Greek tradition of dramatizing the lives of a cursed family, but instead of the House of Atreus, we gain a jagged view of humanity’s affliction through the House of Oedipus. The first play, Antigone, is actually the last chronologically. Oedipus is dead, yet the curse continues. Thebes has defeated an onslaught of Argosian warriors, led by Polynices, the exiled son of Oedipus. He was killed, along with his brother, Eteocles. Antigone, daughter of Oedipus and sister of both Polynices and Eteocles, wants to bury the body of Polynices, but her uncle and Theban King, Creon, threatens anyone who does so with death. I think you can see where things are headed…Next comes Oedipus the King, the shining star of the three plays–the painting within the frame. Each piece has its own beauty, but we move back in time to that dreadful moment of discovery. It’s through Oedipus’ actions that we see an evolution in Greek theater. The plot builds perfectly according to Aristotle’s Poetics and is the cornerstone of many a modern story. Oedipus represents the everyman, marching forward, thinking destiny is within his control, only to discover that he is a mere puppet to fate.A plague has struck Thebes and the only solution is to bring the killer of Thebes’ last king, Laius, to justice. Through plot twists and turns, Oedipus dedicates himself to finding the killer, only to discover that he is the killer, and that he has fulfilled a prophecy which he has tried to avoid all of his life. The truth is too much. His wife and mother, Jocasta, kills herself, and Oedipus gouges out his eyes, his one act of defiant free will. Finally, we are presented with Oedipus at Colonus. Many years have passed and Oedipus has become a wanderer, guided by the loyal Antigone. He finds himself in the town of Colonus, just outside of Athens. The oracular prophecy makes its next move: Oedipus has arrived in the place where he must be buried. This play is an ode to Athens, and by being buried just outside the city, it will be protected for all time. Thus ends the Theban trilogy. Similar to my Aeschylus readings, I picked up the Robert Fagles translation. Sophocles’ writing flows easier and is less dense than that of Aeschylus, so if you had a tough time with The Oresteia, you may find Sophocles to be more in your wheelhouse. From Freud to soap operas, you’ll certainly begin to understand the many references to this bit of dramatic history.

If you are already familiar with the Oedipus Trilogy, this is a fantastic free digital edition. The formatting is easy to read, the text reads easily. My chief complaint with this copy is that there is no navigable table of contents to easily move from one play to the next. If you are completely new to the Oedipus series, do yourself a favor and read it out loud as you are reading it. It may sound silly, but plays are meant to be heard out loud and not read silently. Anyone having a hard time understanding the language will be greatly aided by the rhythms and sounds of the spoken word. Classical reading. Required reading for most high school/college literature classes.
