Book arrived in great condition. Tragic story of the multiple things that Mariatu Kamara endured, such as witnessing horrors of War and being raped and having her hands cut off by rebels. Yet she perseveres. One of the beautiful quotes in her book she says how she doesn't have hands so that she might touch others through her heart. You will definitely need to have some tissues when you read this book or perhaps wipe your eyes on your shirt. It is hard to believe how horrible the world is and reading some of the things that happened in this book to this young women at such a very young age. She perseveres and in reading her book, and in listening to her story, hopefully we can each do our tiny part to be better and make the world better.

I was introduced to this book through the book "the End of Life Book Club." Having read "Long Way Gone" by Ishmeal Beah a few years ago, it was interesting to know that the author of this book and he had once met. This book is from the opposite experience tho both were children - he a child forced to be a rebel soldier in Sierra Leone during the 1990's and Mariatu Kamara a female child amputee survivor of these soldiers. Theirs is a country so different from mine that it is hard to imagine a life of such poverty and harsh treatment much less the constant fear of being attacked by merciless soldiers. You will find this an inspirational and eye-opening book. It made me extremely grateful for the comfortable middle-class life I have led in the United States. It is good that one of the many angels Mariatu found along her journey led her to write this account of her young life so that those of us much more fortunate can appreciate and learn from the struggles of poverty and the cruelties that the many less fortunate have faced.

I have found several autobiographies by individuals who have survived some of the worst atrocities in the world to be somewhat egotistical in that their stories border on fiction [can you remember whole conversations when you were 3 and 4 years old?]. However, Ms. Kamara's story was very realistic, without a grandiose sense of self. Her story rings of true honesty, portraying her in a most realistic way: she tells us her faults as well as her ability to survive and be insightful. It was a quick read [one night!], mostly because I found myself unable to put it down. I would have liked to understand a bit more about the Canadian family and their motives for basically abandoning her [even though it appears to have been for the best] - yet it appears that even Ms. Kamara herself is not completely sure why. What her story has done for me is to read more about Sierra Leone and its history and wars - which is what I feel any good autobiography should do - inspire the reader to find out more.

Bite of the Mango is a good book. I appreciated what appeared to be a very honest story of what happened to this victim of the civil war in Sierra Leone. I felt that she gave a three dimensional picture of herself. She was a girl who was, at times, incredibly courageous and at other times very fearful. As a reader, I felt that I was made to understand both sides of her personality. I don't think that the book's purpose was to present explanations for the cause of the civil war and the incredible amount of savagery. But, the lack of background information was, for me, a shortcoming. I read this book in combination with Ishmael Beah's memoir, A Long Way Gone, and I would recommend reading the two books together.

I read about this book in "The End Of Life Book Club". This is the story of Mariatu who had lived a life of poverty in Sierra leone. She tells us the story of her village where she tells us she had been happy. However at the age of twelve, she is raped by an older man. In this same time frame, news of rebels sweep her area, and the people would hide in the bush for days, weeks, and months. Finally, she and her family are caught, and Mariatu ends with her hands cut off by rebels after watching her village burned and people killed.In her book, written with a co- author, Mariatsu asks that we bear witness to the war, to the poverty, and to the need in Sierra Leone. She doesn't crow about her own courage, although she is extraordinarily brave. She doesn't stoop to the maudlin. She shares her own times of darkness and depression when she judges herself coming short by her own measure; although not by mine.Finally she offers us the chance to bear witness.

This book is both heartbreaking and inspiring. This young girl's story brings home the horrors of war on children and the unbreakable human spirit that survives. It also shows the importance of international and personal involvement needed to help those who suffer. Highly recommended!

I found the book hard to follow as if someone had transcribed it incorrectly in English. The book did not flow well to me and left a lot of important parts out not giving a full understanding of her experience. I loved the book A Long Way Gone and decided to read this as a follow up to hear one of the victim's stories but I had a hard time finishing this book. It just wasn't a good read.

This book was a nice, quick read. Very interesting and would recommend to anyone.

He hits the sweet spot of each Philosophy every time. Beautifully and tersely summarizing them before the fact, with deep and revealing epigrams. That, plus the meat of each philosopher’s respective biographies, and what more can you ask of a single book? What more is there left to be said?Well, how about the summary of the philosophy of one of my heroes, Physicist, David Bohm, plus the summary of his life and career as well as a summary of his tour de force, “Wholeness and the Implicate Order (WATIO)?” I have read six books by him, including WATIO, and got only a tad bit more out of them than the author’s condensed entry here.To wit: The universe is one flowing whole, a holomovement, as it were, where space is more like a “field” pregnant with potential energy, and where matter is better understood as a form of energy than as a collection of individual atoms. Those tiny atoms, are just projections of a single totality.There is no empty space; the vacuum is teeming with activity of transient energy bursts — particles and their anti-particles — going in and out of existence in an instance. Everything is a unified field and nowhere is there a break or a division. Atoms are like a pattern of flowers on a carpet. Being so, it thus makes no more sense to speak of atoms as being separate from the universe, as it does to speak of patterns of flowers as being separate from the carpet? It is only the trace of their energy potential that we can measured as matter.Or, take the terse summary of Hanna Arendt’s philosophy: We have become a society of jobholders. But is it not, she asks, a better life to become heroes in our own life stories? WHAT we are, is our bodies; WHO we are, are our actions disclosed through our words and deeds. It is our ability to act that gives us our identity and our lives meaning and a new beginning — fully justifying hope and faith. History is just a chronicle of the ways we make heroes of ourselves, as we exceed our own expectations.Or, take the summary of Michel Foucault’s philosophy: Every age turns its unconscious assumptions into categories of knowledge about how the world is ordered, making the flavor of knowledge quite different from one age to another. Knowledge thus is a cultural product, with different disciplines simply being different expressions of the prevailing world view.Or take the entry on Hegel’s difficult “Phenomenology of the spirit:” Hegel thinks it is either mad or lazy to restrict the “knowledge project,” — including science — just to the material world.Full understanding requires taking into account everything, not just the material, but also the spiritual. Objective scientific analysis is thus an illusion because with it, things exist only in the context of the perceptions of the observer. But subject, object and the act of observing, are all of one piece, therefore, scientific facts are an illusion — unless that is, consciousness is involved as a primary existential component.However, even here Hegel is speaking of a kind of consciousness that requires reason, and when feelings are applied to a consciousness that requires reason, its okay to say that god operates in the Universe, so long as he too does so under the canopy of reason. Only then is it okay to say that the god of reason is the universal.There is also Martin Heidegger’s difficult “Being in Time,” where he suggests that Analytical Philosophy, arguing over the existence of the world, or what we can know, is a waste of time.The real question for philosophy is: What is personhood? What is it like to be a human being bound by space and time? He rejects Schopenhauer’s notion that the world is merely projections of the mind, and believes that consciousness truly exists “within the world.” Thus, he concludes that there is much more to “being” than meets the eye, especially if you place consciousness out “in the world,” as opposed to just allowing it to be “an observing consciousness.”Descartes’ “I think, therefore I am” is not the only way to know existence. Heidegger’s “I care, therefore I exist” is also a way of doing so too. It is the emotional unfolding of our consciousness into the world that puts the “being” in human beings. Thus, Heidegger sees three modes of operating in the world: the “looking around” mode; the “looking at other beings” mode; and the “looking through ourselves” mode.As a unit of self-reflective consciousness of an individual, there is “being there” — that is, being thrown out into the world to construct meanings and to defend our survival through our own actions. Emotions are our guide-beam to actions. They enable us to “respond in the world,” in the moment. It is a leap of faith that unites us with what is universal in the world.And then there is the grand dean of philosophers, Friedrich Nietzsche, who reminds us in “Beyond Good and Evil,” that while philosophy is seen as an expression of the “will to truth,” this is just an arbitrary prejudice, it could just as easily have been a “will to untruth?”There is no such thing as “moral phenomena,” just “moral interpretations of phenomena.” This being the case, we are all free to pursue our natural courses of self-preservation, a selfish course that could involve dissembling, distrust, evasion, etc. The sick ones are not those who are selfish, but those who act otherwise?Then there is Schopenhauer, who tells us that mature people try to live beyond themselves because they believe there is a reality beyond our senses that we can never know. What we sense is brain projections onto the screen we call “mind.”The brain projection works because the reality we cannot see is ordered according to the already familiar time and space and according to “cause and effect.”The past and the future are as empty and as unreal as any dream. History is a story told in the eye of the beholder. Our will, is just our primal urges, molded into our character. The primary urge is to survival, but mature people seek to transcend survival.Finally, there is Jean Paul Sartre’s magisterial “Being and Nothingness (BAN):” Consciousness exists for itself because it can comprehend itself. It is embedded within a body that is then embedded within the world.Even though existence precedes essence, people are born with no essential essence. What they find at the center of their being is nothing. But this nothing turns out to be something great since it means that we are totally free to create the self or the life of meaning we want. Human reality does not exist first in order to act later: For human reality: to be, is to act. I act, therefore, I am.BAN is thus a warning that life is not just about its facts, but also about how consciousness is free to guide our actions — that is, so long as we accept this freedom in good faith by taking responsibility for everything that happens to us.See what I’m taking about?Touché to Mr. Butler-Bowdon, and five stars

Okay, I bought the book and listened to the audio book. It's good. Nothing crazy, nothing earth shattering, but nice executive summaries on important books - including some gems you have probably never considered. It's superficial, which is to be expected, but it was nicely written and I liked that he included folks such as Chomsky and Taleb as part of the 50 classics. Although, I think the Unabomber Manifesto probably should have been included as well. As abhorrent as his acts were, the Unabomber Manifesto is one of the most lucid descriptions of the faustian bargain of progress I have ever had the fortune to read. But I liked this book, it presented great "wikipedia-style chunks" so I can refer to the book as needed in the future. Well written and good.

This reads like a simplified 'report' written and narrated by a college sophmore. It even has the balls to introduce itself with one of those, "the webster dictionary defines philosophy as..." Ugh. All the worst papers started with a crappy introduction like that. I just sounds like a completely disinterested essay that someone had to write to finish a class. You're much better off reading about each philosophy on it's own from someone who cares - for example, Stoicism explained by William B. Irvine in his book, The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy. This is a lazy summary by someone who wanted to cash in on a growing trend.

Cannot put this book down. If I had to write a book, I'd do it exactly in this manner. Everything is in bite-sized pieces so that someone interested in philosophy does not have to read extensive books by these 50 authors. He boils their ideas down to about three pages, then spends one page for the biography of them, and one page discussing the strengths or weaknesses of their theory. Just amazing the way this is laid out, and has all the great philosophers. I could go on and on about all the mind-blowing lines in this book - if I were highlighting, my marker would be dry lol - but you should just read this for yourself. I rarely ever read books twice, but this will be one of them. After getting my hands on this, I immediately bought the 50 Spiritual Classics book and plan to purchase a few more by this author eventually. Just a brilliant guy who did his homework and gives every theory in a nutshell for us. This book will make you think. If you love philosophy, you need this book!

I love this book. I ordered it because I also have another book in this series called 50 Psychology Classics which is also fantastic. On each classic, you get a super short overview called "in a nutshell" which incredibly (in usually one simple sentence) sums up the essence of the work being described. Then you get a straight forward break down of the work's most important ideas. Interestingly enough, the descriptions are pretty easy to understand. There is also a section called "In a similar vein" which helps you to group together similar works. This is very useful for cross-referencing. Highly recommended!

This book is awesome! It's basically 4-5 page summaries of 50 different philosophers' works. It's a really good starting point for all kinds of ideas, and if one of the philosophers here interests you then you can always go more in depth by ordering the book that was summarized. This is one of those books that everyone should read, regardless of age, and it would go great in any intro to philosophy class.

A really interesting introduction to many, many incredible minds and works. I’d say this is a fundamental book that will set you on a gigantic path of learning.

This is like holding a philosophical library in your hand. Read this book and you will know the most important information from 50 philosophy books. What better leverage of your time can you get.

We visited Mykonos after a recommendation from Kimberly at JetSet Life. It was the perfect 'best' vacation for me and my mom. As explained in the guide Mykonos has something for everyone and although at first I thought it was just a party island...it's not at all. it's there if you want to join but it's classy and never in your face.We loved the island of Delos a must see!! They have a great little cafe that has good drinks and food.I loved Mykonos for the simple feeling, the beach restaurants where you can eat with your feet in the sand but as the guide explains if your looking for something more it's right around the corner. They've searched out the best of the best and it's a must read if you are visiting the island.
