An American Caddie in St. Andrews: Growing Up, Girls, and Looping on the Old Course, by Oliver Horovitz

Review

"This poignant, funny memoir by Oliver Horovitz, a Harvard student who finds his calling on the Scottish links, is an intriguing tour of life at the world's most celebrated course."—Parade“With the energy and joy of youth, he describes his ‘gap year’…His interaction with the group of ‘pretty’ university girls, deemed ‘Model Caddies,’ is wondrous…Horovitz shares his deeply felt memories of golf, girls, and the academy boldly, never taking himself too seriously or being irreverent about the caddie tradition on the time-honored Old Course links.”—Publishers Weekly“In this breezy memoir, the younger brother of a Beastie Boy spills insider tales about looping and living in St. Andrews…the characters—bitter old caddies, the author’s university pals and his 83–year–old uncle—are lovable. So, too, are Horovitz's yarns, which feature late–night antics in the Old Toon and a round caddying for Seinfeld creator Larry David.”—Golf Magazine"A must read."—PGA.com"Anyone looking for a good read should look no further than An American Caddie in St. Andrews."—GolfBiz.net"An utterly absorbing, affectionate, and funny narrative of his halcyon days in St. Andrews.  I loved his memoir so much I lingered over it, relishing my own memories of that mysteriously captivating town, historic links, and addictive Scottish game, and I recommend Ollie's book to those who've either already walked in the footsteps of Old Tom Morris or have a visit to the home of golf on their bucket list."—Ron Hansen, author of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford "Oliver Horovitz is a writer to watch. Even if you don't play golf you will enjoy the Ring Lardner style of Ollie's An American Caddie in St. Andrews. The book has great characters and a wonderful sense of being a fish out of water.—Michael Douglas“This is a story you have to read before your next bogey. Oliver has his priorities spot on!” —Gary McCord"An American Caddie in St. Andrews is a funny, charming, coming-of age tale about golf and life ... Horovitz is a gifted writer, and an engaging storyteller ... and he can read putts!"—Huey Lewis"While exposing the insular world of the St. Andrews caddie, Oliver Horovitz discovers a good deal of truth about golf, golfers, and himself. A terrific read. Recommended."—Curt Sampson, author of The War By the Shore

This is a beautiful story. That old cliche', "I laughed, I cried, I couldn't put it down"? It applies perfectly to "An American Caddie in St. Andrews". If you've already made the bucket list pilgrimage to The Old Course at St. Andrews, or like me it's on the near horizon, this is a must-read non-fiction work. It's captivating from the first page to the last. Author Oliver Horovitz poured his heart and soul into his tale of how an 18 year old New Yorker grew into a very special individual. (That's my assessment, by the way, not his!)I'm a long time golfer, and will be starting my caddie career this summer at age 63. This book has inspired me to shake off any self-doubt, and take advantage of this opportunity. While I won't be caddying at The Old Course, I WILL be looping at a premier links-style course in the Pacific Northwest. I plan to keep Ollie Horovitz's 'lessons learned' in mind as I also try to become a good, competent caddie, worthy of my bib! But "An American Caddie in St. Andrews" is so much more than a guide for prospective caddies; it should be required reading for high school juniors and seniors who haven't yet determined their path forward. It'll help many of them put things like college majors, relationships, and career goals into perspective. It is indeed that good.

A delightful story of how Horovitz comes of age, bouncing back and forth between caddying at St. Andrews and getting his degree at Harvard. First and foremost the book is a love story at multiple levels (and not in a formulaic or expected way). For such a young lad, this kid can write, his prose is fast moving, funny, poignant and insightful. Not only does he give interesting insights into the lifestyle challenges of making a living as a caddie, but he also captures the essence of the Scottish people very well. The best book about the Auld Grey Toon since George Peper’s St. Andrews Sojourn, I found it a satisfying read. As a golfer who always takes a caddie when they are available, I appreciated the insights into the profession. Lovers of the game will love this book.Trigger Alert: The book contains material that will make you extremely envious and jealous of this talented young man.

Especially for the golfer, but even for anyone else, this is a most enjoyable book with several special themes. It is written lightheartedly autobiographically about a young American New Yorker trying to fit in with the caddies at St. Andrews, and thereby describes the unique world of the caddie shack, the relationship between caddies and players, and the various hilarious situations that occur in this most intense, obsessive, frustrating and patently ridiculous sport. The caddie is part teacher, part juggler, part psychiatrist, part weatherman, and part burro - performing at all hours of the day, in any clime, with a smile on his face and a wry comment, all while working for tips. But this book is much more than that. It describes the magic of playing at the birthplace of golf (no golfer who hasn't been there can appreciate it) as well as the fanaticism of the golfer (Ollie is a good one himself). It is also a coming of age story about an engaging and enterprising young man: about his growing up and finding out what is important in life. We follow along with Ollie as he resists the temptation to follow the herd in an Ivy League environment (Horovitz attends Harvard when not caddying), experiences relationships with women, and touchingly appreciates a family relationship with an elderly Scottish uncle, among much else.Disclaimer: I am a lifelong golfer who has played lots of places. My only trip to Scotland was in July 2012, and my caddie was this refreshing young New Yorker. In person, he is true to the engaging protagonist of this book. He made the round truly special, as any good caddie can. If you play golf, if you have ever played the Old Course, if you have ever had a caddie carry your bag and can appreciate it, if you enjoy reading at all, buy this book.

Enjoyed this young man and the story of his golfing journey. Life is all about the "search" anyway,is it not? He should link access to the actual film documentary that he created. It's not hard to find ( with Google ) and it certainly gives the reader a beautiful glimpse into some of the important peeps in his life. While the "usual" donation is $10, he doesn't require it. A wonderful book (and film). As a side note,I have to say that some Amazon " critics" complained he uses the " f " word too much." Fook that- Foooooooahhhh! "

this is a great read and will be most appreciated by golfers who have been to st . andrews and played the Old Course and the other courses in the area . Ollie provides very humorous anecdotes from the original " caddyshack " that you won't get anywhere else . he also provides insights into his own personal struggles with romance , family relationships , what to do with his future , and of course some of the insufferable amateur players that he had to loop for .after reading the book i wish he had provided a link or something that would allow me to buy a dvd of the film he made for his Harvard film class , which dealt with the caddies of st andrews .if you love golf and st andrews buy and read this book

I wasn't sure about this book at first, i thought the culture clash might prove too great. But wasn't i wrong. It's a ripper! One only needs a passing interest in golf to really enjoy this book, there's plenty of non-golfing anecdotes too.In fact, the author has a real affinity with writing. Rarely have i felt like i really knew someone from a description in a book, let alone a 'golf' book, but by the end, i loved Oliver's Uncle Ken as much as my own!!Highly recommended, and gee I wished I had met Uncle Ken and Henry.....What lovely gentelmen from a different time.Don't miss this book.Cheers, Simon.

There were some avenues left unexplored, some questions left unanswered. I honestly Don't know how I feel about the end. However, overall I liked it.There are four types of "twist" endings. The endings you see coming right from the opening act. The endings that that you didn't see, but doesn't surprise you in the least. The endings that blindside you with illogic. Leaving you thinking: "Wait, that doesn't make sence". Then there are the true twists, that take you completely by surprise. This book had a true twist ending. That part was well done.

This was quick and very well-written and totally compelling. The ending did feel rushed to me and I wanted the consequences of it to be explored more than they really were, but on the whole I liked this one a lot.

Bought this book for my daughter. She loved it. Saved money ordering from Amazon versus purchasing from a book store .

I was SHOCKED at the end of this book SHOCKED. One of the greatest plot twists I've ever read. I remember getting towards the end book and thinking, I don't know how Lo is going to wrap this all up in such few pages, but then she goes BOOM and rocks your expectations.Have been a fan for a long time, will always be a fan.

This book is fantastic. It is gripping from the very beginning and does not let up. It also feels very different from Lo's other books, but in by no means a bad way. It was very refreshing. The characters are complex and compelling. Definitely a must read if you enjoy YA, mysteries, or romances.

Overall the book was great. Unreliable narrators are a great choice when you want the reader to second guess everything. I wish that the length of the novel was longer and kept the facts hidden. What is truth when everyone has their own version? Revealing all the facts at the end seemed rushed. Perhaps the facts should have foreshadowed the events instead of being revealed in totality.

GRADE: B4 STARSIf a tree falls in a forest, and no one hears it fall, did it make a sound? The philosophical conundrum attributed to Charles Berkley makes me ask, “If a novel highlighting mental illness never mentions mental illness, is the book still about mental illness?A LINE IN THE DARK is marketed like a psychological thriller, but reads more psychological than thriller, though mental illness is never addressed. Jess and her best friend Angie have an enmeshed relationship, mostly from Jess’s side of the friendship. When Angie starts dating Margot, a girl from a nearby boarding school, Jess becomes more possessive and at one point even stalks Angie. Someone goes missing and turns up murdered. The investigation reveals even more about all the girls and their relationships, including those not mentioned in this review.Jess narrates the first part of the book and the epilogue. The second half of A LINE IN THE DARK contains police interviews and different third person points of view. Also contained in this novel is Jess’s comic book, an allegory for her internal struggles and the plot. I’m not a fan of stories within stories. I think they take away from plot and character development. This was the third or fourth I’ve read in recent months and I haven’t liked any of them.Jess was a character hard for me to champion. She was selfish, controlling, dishonest and downright mean. Had she been over eighteen, her unhealthy attachment to Angie, poor impulse control and risky behavior could have been diagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder. Had Malinda Lo chosen to delve into Jess’s psyche rather than gone with the comic angle, A LINE IN THE DARK would have been a five star read. I also wish Jess’s experiences as a first generation Chinese American had been further explored.I didn’t understand why Angie wanted to continue her friendship with Jess, especially after Jess stalked her.Plot wise, the murder mystery was less interesting to me than Jess’s psyche and the twisted friendships and romantic relationships in the book.Despite its flaws, A LINE IN THE DARK was an enjoyable read and is a book I’ll probably reread in the future.

Good book. Not what i expected at all.
