I assemble all the metadata for librarypicks dot com for LIS systems, from tags to ebooks, digital collections, xml, and many others. In that capacity, I've read, reviewed and recommended over a dozen of the top metadata books, and this volume stands head and shoulders above the rest. I originally heard about it when the librarians at textextras dot com sent a flyer of the top five metadata books, and this was number 1. Number two (albeit MUCH more costly) was June Abbas fine book: Structures for Organizing Knowledge: Exploring Taxonomies, Ontologies, and Other Schema. Frankly, although both are outstanding, THIS title has less history, more content, and is just as up to date as June's, although if you have the budget, Abbas is also a must.First, at nearly 500 pages, it compares (actually excels) others that sell for $100 plus, at a fraction of the cost and three times the coverage. As an MIT title, the editing quality is comparable to Springer titles that are not as up to date, and cost $150 US plus.I'm sometimes surprised at the "hot selling" big data titles for companies, when this lesser known Library Information Science/Systems (LIS) field has extraordinary metadata information, from digital files to storage and retrieval (this author's forte). There even is a new "CDSO" position in companies (Chief Data Science Officer) paying in some cases over $240K US, which is, essentially, a digital librarian with great semantic web and/or XML skills! Data Science folks take note: you get a much bigger bang for your buck with this title, which covers your field as well as many deeper search/ cataloging topics, very up to date, than specialized books lunching off the "big data" title and really not covering the "how to" essentials as this fine text does.If you're new to the field, "meta" generally means recursion, so metadata is data about data-- keywords, searches, indexing, cataloging, taxonomy, ontology, classification science, etc. It is the old card catalog updated to the Google era of search/ retrieval, and at its apex, deals with bayesian models, markov, stats, etc. in "guessing" the most relevant hierarchies. In the words of one of the greatest philosphers of all time (Jeff Goldblum in Law and Order, Criminal Intent): "The brain is, essentially, a relevance machine." Ergo, hierarchies and classifications using recursion! Some scholarly journals are now even requiring standardized classification system numbers in specialized areas (like ISBN or ASIN), only for numerous science topics. Two examples: The MSC2010 in math, and the ACM 2012 in Computer Science. Google them for examples. Physicists are already aware of the newer Gauge classifiers, and LIS and big data folk are now folding those into wider bodies of knowledge in STEM. Other bodies of knowledge focus on standards, like IEEE, but also are essentially classification systems.The book covers the broadest range of topics I've found in metadata, from digital to classic organization science. It also gives a great bib, so you can buy the RIGHT XML detail book for $20 instead of the prettied-up "XML for Librarians" for $80! Big data-ers take note: this author also details more specialized software and apps that are just as important for IT departments and corporations in general, as libraries. If you're into LIS, search engines, bodies of knowledge, classifications systems, etc. this is a MUST. But I'd also push the envelope and say that it also will find a great new audience for the price and content in big data. Highly recommended.By the way, speaking of, if you ARE in IT or big data, Glushko also has a more technical corporate-frame book that's also from MIT, and was on sale for a while (at 700 pages!) for under $20 US. Compare it to others HERE: Document Engineering: Analyzing and Designing Documents for Business Informatics and Web Services.Emailer question: "I heard this guy is more of a library than IT person, and trashes IT. Is that true?" A. Actually, no. The author makes a point of "staying positive" but does tell a sad and funny story of Bush/Memex and a bunch of MIT researchers who wasted nearly entire careers on a "weblike organizing machine"-- even presaging URLs in some ways, but which never saw the light of day or proved useful to anyone. Glushko deftly shows how LIS principles not only would have saved that effort, but also how they were and are being employed in the digital age in many forms. Some LIS folks call things resources, arrangements, relationships, scans, retrieves, interactions etc. that we IT folks would call parsing, compiling, links, subroutines, objects and classes, but Glushko is savvy enough to relate these to each other throughout the text. This book really creates an entirely new field of "organizing science" at the intersections of Big Data, LIS and IT, pretty amazing.

I bought this book because two of my classes this semester are using excerpts for reading assignments. The classes are: Organizing Information and Digital Libraries. I find that the author will try to explain abstract concepts by using real life examples and often is successful at making these more difficult to grasp concepts more practical in nature. Sometimes I admit, it can get a bit over my head. Overall, it is a good book and I am learning a lot.

If you're a library student, or a grad student doing research on information behavior, this is the book for you. It's an extraordinarily well-researched book on how to organize information. Because of it's relative newness, it does delve into concepts of social tagging, etc. I found it very useful for my indexing and organizing information class, and as I said, it has it's own extensive index and well organized chapters. Once you get used to the formatting and subheadings, you'll notice that the author even has a pretty good sense of humor- he uses real-life, and TV shows to illustrate some of his points, and this book, though the title sounds boring, is actually pretty darn good if you're an information junky.

Good condition. I like to highlight and put notes in the margins; the paper is thinner than I prefer. Although a bit long winded at times, it IS a textbook (plus is SUPER affordable for a textbook). I'm not a LIS student/professional. I started administering a messy CRM database at work, and I wanted a book that could guide my thinking. I prefer to learn about a topic using an interdisciplinary approach, so this book is perfect in that respect.

This is a good read for anybody in the library and information sciences. I am enjoying it, but he certainly takes organization to the next level. By the way, I am not an information scientist. I am reading this book for pleasure.

I had to read this for my Masters degree in Library Science and suffered through it. So boring, too long, and too dry.

This is an awful book for librarians. Glushko uses "real life" examples to clarify the principles of organization and it is not effective. I had to purchase another textboook because this one did not explain the concepts clearly. If i wanted a book for all disciplines it would be decent, but if used to teach graduate level organization and management then it sucks.

Will help with library science and insomnia.

When critics say Confederacy is not true-to-life because it's full of despicable characters; unlikely situations; and plot-holes, I have to wonder what kind of lives they have---because that's a near perfect description of mine. JKT is (was) a master at turn-of-phrase with a gift for writing large the theater-of-the-absurd, but that's not really why I love this book so much.I re-read aCoD every three to five years for a "humility tune up." The book is a highly polished soul mirror that's a lot more true-to-life than most people want it to be. Ignatius, or "His Royal Malignancy" as I like to call him, is the central character, and an extreme example of an arrogant bastard with absolutely nothing to be arrogant about, but the whole book is like a case study for John Calvin's doctrine of total depravity; everyone in it is---to some degree--indelibly screwed up. I suspect this is why so many people hate this book. At some point they see themselves here and realize that the depth of their own depravity is invariably greater than they suspected, realized, or certainly would ever have cared to admit.If you love Ignatius J. Reilly, there is probably something really wrong with you, but if you hate him---there definitely is. Either way, you're doomed.

If you’ve heard of this book, but not read it, you’re probably aware of the troubled circumstance of its publication. Several years after having failed to be published, Toole committed suicide. The story of the book would have ended there, except Toole’s mother found the typescript and carted it around to people in the literary community. After much persistence and not taking no for an answer, she managed to get Walker Percy to read the manuscript, and the rest is posthumous Pulitzer Prize winning history.It would be easy to dismiss the editors involved in rejecting this manuscript as grade-A lunkheads, or as the lead character (Ignatius J. Reilly) likes to verbally skewer his victims “Mongoloids.” However, one can see how said lunkheads would find this much-beloved novel risky. It’s a character-driven novel in which the lead character is obnoxious and unlovable in the extreme. Reilly is a pretentious and pedantic professorial type--verbally speaking-- wrapped into the obese body of a man-child who is emotionally an ill-mannered five year old with a bombastic vocabulary. Reilly has no impulse control, takes no responsibility, and is prone to tantrums, sympathy-seeking dramatic displays, and wanton lies. He’s the worst because he thinks he’s better than everyone despite the fact that in all ways except his acerbic tongue, he’s worse than everyone.That said, the book—like its unsympathetic lead character—is hilarious through and through. What it lacks in a taught story arc and a theme / moral argument (the latter being why the editor at Simon and Schuster rejected the book after showing initial interest in it) it more than makes up in hilarity.I should point out that when I say that this isn’t a plot-driven book, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have an interesting wrap-up at the end—which I will not discuss to avoid spoiling it. The plot revolves around events in the life of a lazy man-child forced to go to work. It’s not a journey of change, discovery, or adventure. While, in most cases, a character-driven story with an unmalleable lead would be a recipe for a book that flops, here it keeps one reading to the last page because it’s Ignatius’s failure to become a better man that ensures the book is funny to the end. Reilly is constantly making decisions that are both overly contemplated and yet ill-considered.The book follows Ignatius Reilly through an event that results in a tremendous loss of money for Ignatius’s mother. This forces her to finally put her foot down and insist the man—who she still thinks of as her little boy—get a job. It should be noted that Ignatius’s mother’s eventual coming around to the monster her son has become is a major driving force in the story—though we can see a distinct lack of taking of responsibility that echoes that of Ignatius, himself. Ignatius gets a fine—if lowly, clerical--job at the slowly-dying Levy Pants Company, but gets fired after he encourages a worker protest that goes awry. He then gets a job as a hotdog cart vendor—a job considered the lowest of the low by both his mother and New Orleans’ society-at-large. The latter is the job he has at the end when a final chain of events unfolds (not without tension and drama, I might add.)On the theme issue, the Simon & Schuster editor was correct that the book isn’t really about anything except how to muddle through life as a lazy, cranky, emotionally-stunted, and overly-verbose doofus. (But he was oh-so wrong about that being a lethal deficit—according to the Pulitzer Prize committee as well as innumerable readers.)I’d recommend this for any reader with a sense of humor. You won’t like Ignatius J. Reilly, but you’ll find his antics hilarious, and you’ll want to know what happens to him in the end even if he is irredeemable.

What an amazing book! I had never heard of the book until I saw it on a co-workers desk. Read the story behind the book and was intrigued.I was hooked from the first page. The book has a great flow to it with great evocative characters and wonderful dialogue. The book was written in 1963 so you have to remember it was a different world then. Helps to know a little about the social and political climate of that time period to put things in Perspective. Yes Ignatius is a jerk, but that's part of the beauty of this book.I don't understand the negative reviews and the people that say they had to labor through it or couldn't finish it. I could not put this book down.To me the mark of a great book is when you can't wait to steal away for even just a few minutes to read.Easily one of the best books I have ever read if not THE best. I'm 54 and an avid reader so that says a lot.

ACoD was recommended to me by a friend as outstanding, and i dove right in. At first i was all like, huh? But i usually stick with novels i start-- e.g., i bought The Satanic Verses a few years ago, and was pretty unimpressed and not getting it for about the first 100 pages, then i suddenly thought Oh! My! God! and started over; yes, it's a masterpiece, read it if you haven't already-- and ACoD picks up steam fast and is a delight of hilarity and razor sharp social commentary throughout. The ending is perfect.The Loyola professor who discovered this treasure wrote in the introduction how the mother of John Kennedy Toole contacted and hounded him to read her smeared carbon copy, after Toole was already tragically a suicide. And how he was determined not to read it; and finally, because of her relentless insistence, started it, thinking, OK! i'll read a few pages and then quit, hoping it was not JUST good enough that he'd have to read it all. The rest is literary history, and thank goodness he did read it and get it published.I started my old worn paperback to reread some time ago, then thought, no, i'm going to try to find this (used) in hardback & do it right. I found it new in an anniversary edition on Amazon, and am very happy with the purchase! "A green hunting cap squeezed the top of the fleshy balloon of a head."...

About the Author

Michelle Damiani is a freelance writer and clinical psychologist currently living in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her heart, however, is in Spello, Italy, where she and her family spent a year growing accustomed to being fish out of water, grappling with the hardships of parenting on foreign soil, and ultimately cleaving into the soul of Italian village life. While in Italy, Michelle used the time that her children were in Italian public schools to write a blog about their experiences. Once back in Charlottesville, she transformed the blog into a book, Il Bel Centro: a Year in the Beautiful Center. Her daily life in Umbria later inspired her novel, Santa Lucia. Written in sweeping telenovela style, and packed with drama, Santa Lucia is nonetheless grounded in the green heart of Italy. When not writing, doing therapy, or relaxing with her family, she can be found experimenting in the kitchen or tucked away with a travel memoir, dreaming of once again hitting the open road. I enjoyed reading Michelle's backstory about the move to Spello as much as I enjoyed the stories of all of the contributors. Many were mind boggling! I never imagined the possibility of living on a boat with your children while sailing to different countries or of long term traveling with your children in a motor home. This book will open your mind about what is achievable and it will inspire you with how travel can strengthen family bonds and family understanding of the world.

I was prepared to like the book because I am familiar with the authir’s previous works, but I was surprised by how much it really sparked curiosity in my own family.We have always loved to travel, but have been intimidated at the prospect of actually living in another country. Michelle’s book makes that dream so attainable. So a great read, but also so inspirational which is a word I always use sparingly. Not this time- it is such a great book!!

This is a book for families looking for adventure. The author and her family left the U.S. to live in a small town in Italy for one year. So she knows what she is writing about. Many people dream of living with their family in a foreign country for a while, or forever, and they all wonder, How they can we do this? What about school? Work? Money? Language? Health insurance? This book jumps into all issues, complications, planning, and joys of attempting the impossible. The book is not just a “how to” manual, although it does give lists and discussions of about every issue you’d need to consider. It is a collection of stories told by parents who took their kids out of their regular life (in America and other countries) and put them in very different situations—some lived in one place, some moved around, some kids went to local schools, some to private schools, some were “worldschooled.” The stories, including the author’s, show how each family’s adventure is unique, their choices individual, and that there is no one-size-fits-all recommendation or experience. Even if you are just pondering a life abroad with your family, and even if you aren’t, this book is invaluable resource and just a plain good read. You may want to star packing your bags.

Very enjoyable ... made me wish I’d moved abroad when my kids were younger, but really put some ideas in my head about retirement! There are lots of stories from families who moved abroad to many different countries. I especially enjoyed learning how folks resolved issues they encountered as well as the shared moments that made their move memorable.Michele Damiani provides her own stories, bringing me back to her wonderful year in Spello with her family.I thoroughly enjoyed The Road Taken and recommend it to anyone thinking of moving abroad or just armchair dreaming...

The Road Taken is a wonderful “how to” book to make traveling dreams come true. Theauthor based her advice on living in Italy and found numerous contributors who with their children relocated overseas. It was a diverse group of people, Americans, Canadians, Brits. Some were nomads on the move continuously while others settled in one location. The common thread was they all traveled with children. No one sugar coated his/her advice but all seemed like ordinary people who chose extraordinary adventures.The book was laid out in an organized manner from saving for the trip initially to reacclimating to the home country at the end. Special focus was placed on making the trip as meaningful to the children as it was for adults. Ms. Damiani’s background as a school psychologist created a unique perspective for acclimating children in a foreign environment. Each topic began with Michelle’s personal experience followed by others’ stories and suggestions. Many of the contributors are bloggers so entries were well written and informative.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever considered exploring other cultures. It is an uplifting book that makes the reader want to pack up the kids, pets and passports and hit the road

Full disclosure: I am going to dive head first into anything Michelle Damiani writes. Even though I am not going anywhere soon, travel is in my blood, and I love stories of it, hers, mine, and yours. Probably like anyone who has followed the author's family, I am especially interested in hearing about their experiences. But it was a great idea to expand the scope of adventures to include those of other families who were also undertaking lengthy sojourns. I hope this book inspires others to venture out, and especially to give their children opportunities to truly engage with other cultures and to learn other languages. As a seasoned corporate expat, I was so inspired by families that planned and then picked up and moved on their own!!! I enjoyed reading how different families approached their journey. Some stayed in one place, those really adventurous ones country hopped. Other families world-schooled, others registered in local schools. There were honest stories of the difficulties in the choice to move abroad, but nobody said that they wished they had not made the move.Great combination of practical logistical advice (especially the medical advice), advice from a professional counselor on the psychological aspects of moving as well as some truly wonderful personal stories.I would recommend this book to anyone considering moving abroad.If I have one bit that I did not personally enjoy, it would be some of small paragraphs from a few of the contributors at the end of each chapter, some of their blurbs just did not add anything to the big picture for me (this is the reason for 4 not 5 stars).
