Charles Adams has some definite, perhaps you might even call them extreme views on taxes. In this book he talks about taxes down through American history from the Whiskey Rebellion down through how the modern tax structure which has been developed down through the centuries to be something that the public will put up with and not (quite) revolt.Two particular aspects were enjoyable to me. One was how the constitution says taxes should be equal They graduated tax where rich are taxed more is obviously not equal. But since it is popular to tax the rich, no revolt of the masses. Of course the rich don't pay the tax rate the nominally stated in the law. They get loopholes as a result of political contributions. Obama and Romney, as best I remember paid about 22%, a long way from the nominal tax rate for their income -- good tax accountants and lawyers.Second was how politicians think that simply raising the tax rate will generate more revenue, when it actually generates less. The higher the taxes, the more money spent on: good tax accountants and lawyers, the underground or cash economy, moving overseas (maybe physically moving, or just moving your money).

This book is for general reading and should not be confused with a scholarly history of taxation. It is a series of chapters that are brief retellings of various historical incidents involving citizens resisting taxation in various ways or citizens being made to suffer through taxation programs. These tellings do have a point of view and historians may find some of them rather blunt and ignoring certain subtleties that might mitigate some of the author's point of view. However, in total the book does make its point that it is up to the citizens to hold the government responsible for its spending and the taxation it levies to pay for that spending.While I abhor taxation beyond what is absolutely necessary, I think all the arguments about taxes actually function to distract us from the real thing we should be debating and that is government spending. The problem is that the modern state has so many of us on the receiving end of this or that program that we will resist any program that decreases the increase in our program's spending (let alone any actual cuts). So, when someone proposes ANY cut in spending, those being cut raise a loud resistance effort to defeat it. This is why we try and starve the government by cutting taxes - the hope being that the starved beast will not be able to increase the handouts without limit.Anyway, this can be an entertaining read. There is a list for further reading and an index. Just don't take everything in here as gospel.

Author Charles Adams is a former lecturer at UCLA and a tax consultant with the CATO Institute, a Washington D.C. Think Tank. He has written many publications on the subject of taxes, with most all of them attacking the present system of income tax and discussing ways to improve the system of internal revenue collection.This book is mostly a lesson in history and it explains in detail how certain taxes came into being and how the American people reacted. Much of the coverage here is old news, like the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, and the protests that led to the American Revolution. But then there are other taxes that are not so well- known, like the tariffs that led to the Civil War in the 1800's. Most people think the Civil War was fought over slavery, but this was only one reason among many. Adams shows how Lincoln deliberately used taxes to antagonize the South, leading ultimately to war, which was exactly what he wanted.The income tax is the one that most Americans know best, because it's the tax that everyone pays at present. Woodrow Wilson was president when the income tax became law. Officials who passed the tax swore that it would never be greater than a few percentage points and it would never be levied against anyone except the very wealthy. Of course, as everyone knows, this was a blatant lie to sell the plan to the states and to the general public. Once the ability to tax was in place, it was only a matter of a few years before it expanded and grew to several times the original level. Adams talks at length about the deceptions used by politicians to get this and other taxes enacted.Adams spends most of the book talking about the income tax and possible alternatives to the tax. One part of the book is titled "The tyranny of the income tax, 1913 to 199?". This book was published in 1998. Adams was being very optimistic if he thought the income tax would be a thing of the past only 1 year after he published his book. The use of the question mark shows his optimism that the income tax will be replaced with a different system of taxation at some point in the near future.This book is a fairly quick read. The print is larger than normal and many of the pages include illustrations, with political cartoons and photos from the past, mocking the government's position on taxation. The cartoons are mostly humorous in nature, and they depict different political figures and other people talking cynically about different taxes and their affects on the people.Overall, this is a good book about the issue of taxation and rebellion. It's obviously biased against taxes, but author Charles Adams maintains a level of respect throughout, stating some of the facts about taxes and offering up alternatives to the present system. He doesn't resort to name- calling, like some other authors. You can tell that Adams is no friend of taxation, but he basically lets you, the reader, decide for yourself about this difficult issue and how it has affected Americans from the early days of the republic.

Adams, who wrote For Good and Evil about ten years earlier, is back, with a very readable concentration on the American tax experience. If you want the details on where we've been and where we are in taxation history and policy — and some ideas on what to do about it — this book should definitely be on your top reading list.

I read this book on the suggestion of a friend. It's billed as "young adult" fiction. I'm certainly no longer in that age category, having celebrated 63 years.The book references how a teen girl deals with the suicide of her younger brother. It's not even slightly maudlin about it. The author describes the girls feelings so well, you feel them with her, all the while hoping things "get better" with time.I read every word, quickly, anticipating....the ending was perfect. I cried.(My husband of one year killed himself years ago. I miss him every day.)

Cynthia Hand is back with a new book that is a marked departure from the Unearthly series, but just as amazing! The genre of suicide is quickly becoming a bigger market (at least currently), but it can be hard to find novels that are done well and give the subject the respect it deserves. However, this novel does this excellently, and should be on your TBR list right away.The one thing that I loved about this book is that it wasn't actually about the person who committed suicide. It was about the aftermath and what happens to the people left behind. This was an interesting path to take, and I think Ms. Hand raised awareness to the fact that suicide effects everyone. The Last Time We Say Goodbye is wonderful in its simplicity, and serves as a tribute to those who are left behind. While it is a heartbreaking read, at the same time, it reminds everyone reading the importance of paying attention and remembering that you never know when the last time you see or speak to someone will be. Put simply, this novel makes you think. And that is where the true beauty lies.Lex, our main character, is extremely strong, even if she doesn't think so. She must find a way to deal with her brother's suicide and find a way to move on. And this is exactly what she does. This isn't a love story, where Lex meets a guy that shows her there's more to life than dwelling on the event that happened 3 months ago. This is the story about a girl who finds herself, and gets through this incredibly difficult situation on her own. Along the way she realizes that she isn't alone, and that getting to that place where everything she is feeling is a bit more manageable takes time.This is a deep novel that is full of heartfelt and touching moments. While it won't be the easiest novel to read as it is a tearjerker, it is worth it in every single way. This is an absolute must-read, so don't put this one off!Happy reading :)

When I read the cover to your book I thought to myself that I might be hurt or cause myself pain by reading this fictional plot/storyline. I was immediately drawn into your descriptions, words and emotions. I kept reading because I could not put down your book, your words. I know in the end that you stated very clearly that the book is not your life but the words you wrote, the feelings you expressed are those of a survivor of suicide. I ended up crying in the end but not until I read your acknowledgement and I realized that you suffered a loss also. Thank you for sharing your heart and your mind.

When you read a book where suicide plays a crucial role in the plot, you go into the novel with the expectation that you are going to feel some things. Maybe a lot of things. You go in knowing that there's a good chance that you are going to cry. You go in with the knowledge that you might get mad. You do not go into the novel with the expectation of not feeling anything.Unfortunately, that is what happened when I read The Last Time We Say Goodbye. From the first line to the last, I can honestly say that my emotions did not change at all throughout the story.I wish there was a few details about the novel that I could hold up and say I really enjoyed but honestly, there was nothing in this book that felt noticeably good enough for me to point out. The characters, for the most part seemed flat. There were a few minor characters here and there that could have possibly been interesting but they were in the book so little that there's no way of knowing. The plot was all over the place. It flitted from one thing to another to yet another and none of it really flowed. It felt like reading a montage of scenes in an outline in an early draft of a novel. That's what reading this felt like. Throw in some suicide statistics and it just completely took me out of any kind of plot flow this novel may have had.

This book was incredibly difficult for me to read, but not because it was poorly written in any way. If anything, it was hard to read because Cynthia Hand writes incredibly well about a grief that I am intimately familiar with. I lost my own younger brother to suicide, and reading this story brought up all of the emotions and pain that goes along with that kind of loss in a very visceral and real way.What strikes me the most about this beautifully written story is how it is not so much about death as it is about forgiveness. Yes, the book centers on the suicide, but it also revolves around Lex’s need to forgive those around her. Not just her brother, but her mother, friends, and herself as well. The story is very dark, but it doesn’t shy away from the grief that Lex experiences.This book is an extremely well written, character-driven story of grief and forgiveness. I highly recommend it.

I feel so ashamed and so weak. And cheapened. How could I do this? Lisa Kleypas and I were officially divorced in March of 2018 after I read HELLO STRANGER. And then what do I go and do? Hook up with her again in February of 2019 for this book. Now that it's over I don't feel at all good about myself. And that time together wasn't pleasurable. No Big O for me here. I've been left completely unsatisfied and feel so bad about myself. Not only that, but I had to pay her for our time together.I blame it on Sebastian, my long-ago heartthrob from THE DEVIL IN WINTER. He and his True Love Evie are the parents of this book's heroine, and I had heard he plays a larger role here than he had done in DEVIL IN SPRING, the book about their son Gabriel and that twit Pandora Ravenel. Alas, he may have been on more pages but he came across as a pretty generic silver fox duke who's a super husband (more faithful than a swan), super father/grandfather, and super aristocrat. I calculate he must be in his 60s but he's still gorgeous and still virile without the need to find fresh, nubile women for his bed or even little blue pills. Evie is one lucky little old lady. But as far as any new or interesting developments in their lives, no such thing.And the plot and characters of this book? Just thinking about it and them is putting me to sleep. Generic young widow grieving her dead-too-young invalid husband and former close childhood friend. She's boring and has nothing of the "devil" in her DNA. Our hero is West Ravenel, whom we've known since COLD-HEARTED RAKE. He's a reformed rake and recovering alcoholic who has left London and his scandalous ways behind to become an excellent hands-on estate manager.Phoebe thinks she'll never love again. In addition, she resents West, whom she had never really met, just because as a schoolboy he had bullied her future husband and apparently made his two years away at school a misery. And West thinks he's not worthy of love or happiness. And he fears he could become a physically violent man like his father. Yada, yada, yada.Interspersed with the romance is some boring information about the old vs new ways of farming and managing estates, keeping an estate's financial records, stuff about pig excrement, an enraged bull, lots of descriptions of clothing, food, buildings, and interior decor. There's a token nod to agency for women in that Phoebe must learn to take over control of her son's estate rather than relying on a man. That one got very much watered down by the fact that she ends up relying on West rather than herself. Oh, and I mustn't forget the adorableness factor: the heroine's two young boys and a cat named Galoshes.I'd say that at least one quarter to one third of the pages of the book are spent on sex scenes, whether it be foreplay or the actual deed. And it's all described in unbearably flowery, over-the-top purple prose. I highlighted a couple passages to share:"...[he] eased his aching shaft out of her warm, succulent depths, his body aching in anguish.""...she cried out as he slid back into her, his hardness stretching her lusciously.""...a powerful climax began, wringing every inch of her body with raw force..."Oh, good lord. Pass over the sick bag. I think I may lose my breakfast.So, no thanks. But Kleypas gets two stars from me anyway. She enticed me into buying this, didn't she? If I ever buy another new Kleypas, I must remember to give that future book 5-10 stars, just because of what a good con it was and how she managed to fool me again. And you know what that fooling beyond the first time makes me, right?

Sadly, not a five star, but not a one star by any means.Who's the good boy?Well, not the latest St. Vincent since that would be the son of the man we all love... to love, but the ex St. Vincent, Sebastian, from "Devil in Winter", now the Duke of Kingston. Our St. Vincent is still top of the food chain in this book that features his oldest daughter.No, St. V doesn’t overwhelm the story, but if you’re a fan any glimpses of him and Evie are always great.Phoebe is a widow with two young boys. She adored her young husband who was her childhood sweetheart and was doomed to die an early death. He's a very Keats kind of hero despite this story taking place in the late 19th century."When I have fears that I may cease to beBefore my pen has gleaned my teeming brain,Before high-pilèd books, in charactery,Hold like rich garners the full ripened grain;When I behold, upon the night’s starred face,Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,And think that I may never live to traceTheir shadows with the magic hand of chance;And when I feel, fair creature of an hour,That I shall never look upon thee more,Never have relish in the faery powerOf unreflecting love—then on the shoreOf the wide world I stand alone, and thinkTill love and fame to nothingness do sink."The heroine really loved her husband, but as us readers and her father knows, he was really not THE one.Protective of her husband’s legacy, Phoebe is reluctant to come back to society. Her brother’s wedding has dragged her out of mourning and into association with her husband’s nemesis at school. Concerns of bullying and old grudges are put aside as the h gets to know the West, the charming hero, as he unintentionally woos her and her two young sons. The H steps back from wooing her as he feels unworthy. Lisa Kleypas steals a plot point from "Where Dreams Begin" where the widow’s husband is pledged to one of the husband's cousins/friends.Nice set up for the heroine’s brothers and sisters's books, but, as always, for fans of the older books and hint of Evie and especially St. Vincent is golden.When confronted by the vanilla villain as the H West is attacked by the bad guy at a club. Guess who saves the H? "Even before West had a good look at the newcomer’s face, he recognized the smooth, dry voice with its cut-crystal tones, so elegantly commanding it could have belonged to the devil himself.“Finger off the trigger, XXXXXXX. Now.” It was Sebastian, the Duke of Kingston . . . Phoebe’s father."Apparently St. Vincent is 001, the precursor to 007. He has the moves down and the agents. "Keeping hold of XXXXXXX as if he were a disobedient puppy, Kingston berated him quietly.“After the hours I just spent with you, providing excellent advice, this is the result? You decide to start shooting guests in my club? You, my boy, have been a dismal waste of an evening. Now you’re going to cool your heels in a jail cell, and I’ll decide in the morning what’s to be done with you.”………………………………. "West lifted his hand in a gesture of farewell and followed Niall. The porter was dressed in a uniform, some kind of rich matte cloth in a shade of blue so dark it looked black. No gilt or fancy trim, save for a thin, black, braided trim on the lapels of the coat, and on the collar and cuffs of the white shirt. Very discreet and simple, tailored for ease of movement. It looked like a uniform for killing people."And who the heck is St. Vincent talking about below? St. Westcliff, the new H, someone else? “Most men have inner demons,” Kingston replied quietly. “God knows I do. So does a friend who’s the finest and most genuinely moral man I’ve ever known.”Overall, quite decent action and romance between the charming, well meaning H and the warm heroine, but it never attains the quality and depth that the Hathaway or the Wallflower series have. I needed more about the constraints with the heroine and her MIL, more between the h and H, and more interaction with the OM.I hesitate to suggest this, but there was a rushed aka novella quality and more than a hint of phoned in on the story. So much more could have been addressed rather than simply touched on aka the brief appearance of the other Wallflowers. Still, Lisa Kleypas writing is beautiful and engaging as always.
