I like the way this book is organized and the author selection. There are seventeen chapters, each written by an expert, and so authoritative and current. The chapters are organized around four major areas:Problems of Inequality (Poverty and Class, Race, Gender, Sexuality, Aging),Problems of Institutions (Education, Media, Family, Work and the economy),Problems of Health and Safety (Crime, Drugs, Health),Problems of Global Impact (Environment, Science and Technology, War and Terrorism, Urbanization).This is not the only way material could be organized or included. One could argue that Law Enforcement should have been included under the Institutions section, for example, while in the Crime section, police get one page. In the Gender section there is little material on issues that face men.More theoretical than practical, issues are disussed at a high level emphasizing theory and the big picture. Material is well presented, with clear organization, with effective use of anecdotes, summaries, statistics, vocabulary and discussion points, and many graphics including color photographs.The book concludes with a good glossary, very good bibliography and mediocre index.

"Investigating Social Problems" with A. Javier Trevino and a panel of expert contributors makes for provocative and interesting reading. The topics covered use current events to examine and explain. The three key themes may produce a little pushback for an older reader (like myself) but overall, the presentation holds together well. It is challenging reading and probably much more effective in a classroom setting where discussion and interaction can help illuminate the themes, but as a standalone read, it had a lot to offer. Although I did not take advantage of it, there are study tools available online.

I like the topics but overall felt this was geared more toward a high school or at best, community college level. Timely topics, well presented and excellent organization that brings the issues to life but simply felt a bit simplistic. I really enjoyed the case studies and overall structure of the book.

About the Author

Edmund P. Clowney (1917-2005) received his B.A. from Wheaton College in 1939, a Th.B. from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1942, an S.T.M. from Yale University Divinity School in 1944 and a D.D. from Wheaton College in 1966. Ordained in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, he served as pastor of several churches from 1942 to 1946 and was then invited to become assistant professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in 1952. He became that institution's first president in 1966, and he remained there until 1984, when he took a post as theologian-in-residence at Trinity Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 1990, Clowney moved to Escondido, California, where he served as adjunct professor at Westminster Seminary California. In 2001, he took a full-time position as associate pastor at Christ the King Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Houston, Texas. After two years, he returned to Charlottesville, where he resumed part-time the post of theologian-in-residence at Trinity Presbyterian Church. He remained in this role until his death. Clowney was instrumental in the birth or growth of such ministries as the Reformed Theological Seminary in Aix-en-Provence, France; Westminster Seminary California; Trinity Church, Charlottesville; the Lausanne Conference; InterVarsity ministries, both in the United States and in England; and "The Westminster Ministerial Institute," an inner-city training program for pastors in Philadelphia, out of which was grown the Center for Urban Theological Studies. Clowney is remembered by many as a preacher, perhaps the most gifted proponent and practitioner of redemptive-historical preaching of this generation. His writing also displays the great theme of his life, namely Christ's presence in the whole of Scripture and his present work in the church. I am a seminary student at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. This book was required reading for a theology class.I found it to be an average resource with limited original perspective and very little application. It was a decent review of the theology of the church, full of Bible references and following the Reformed perspective typical of this particular series.It did not engage the issues of women in ministry or the contemporary application of spiritual gifts to my satisfaction.I would only buy this book again if I needed a reference for Reformed theology on this topic. Most of the concepts and references in this resource can be found elsewhere to greater depth and with more engagement of alternative perspectives.Jonathan

In the past decade, it seems that I have been a part of churches that hit most of the stereotypes within Baptist circles. I worked as a youth intern in a fairly standard contemporary church. Went from that to being the college intern for a year in a church that probably looked about the same as it did in 1950. After that I headed up the college group for a couple of years at a place that did the whole seeker-sensitive/attractional thing, and now my wife and I have landed at an Acts29 plant. From that range of experience, I can tell you that there is a broad spectrum of ideas on what the church should look like. To be honest, for a long period of time I didn't know if there was an answer to that question. This confusion is one of the reasons the at reading Edmund Clowney's The Church was a great experience for me.This book will by no means address every question one may have about how a church should be set up, but it was never meant to. Instead, it broadly looks at what the Bible says as regarding the church to create a sound case for what should be true of every church, regardless of the specifics of polity, music style, or other specific issues. Instead, Clowney paints with broad strokes, looking at how the church is created thought the work of God before looking at the traditional attributes (one, holy, apostolic, and catholic/universal) and marks (preaching of the gospel and proper administration of the sacraments) of the church. Following this he turns to more practical issues, considering the church's relation to the world and some specific topics such as the sacraments and women in ministry.The book is an academic work, so it reads a little on the dry side, but the material in it is of tremendous value, especially in a time when it seems people consider their preferences and pragmatism to be as important as Scripture. Clowney's work points everything back to the Bible as the starting point for the discussion.Especially helpful to me was the discussion over the three aspects of the church's mission (worship to God, encouragement to believers, and evangelism to the world). In my experience, it seems one or more of these aspects is emphasized to the detrainment of the others, such as the popular statement that "the church is the only institution that exists for the sake of those outside itself." Clowney's work here helps correct these erroneous conclusions that are ultimately unhelpful.That is not to say that everything in this work is equally helpful. There are a few points on which I disagreed with the author, most notably during his discussion of infant baptism. For the most part, however, the book is broad enough that it does not take sides on the issues that have traditionally divided Protestant denominations. If you are looking for a work that is a strong introduction to Ecclesiology (the doctrine of the church) and don't mind reading something akin to a textbook, then The Church is worth your consideration.

In our culture, the church is almost irrelevant in the eyes of many Christians. It ultimately becomes a consumer item, and and people choose to attend the one that meets their "needs" the best. Dr. Clowney, a gifted scholar, gentle spirit, and dedicated churchman, has written an important work on what the church IS according to Scripture. Dr. Clowney, an ordained minister in the PCA, does not argue that any one denomination is the most biblical, instead, he shows what the Lord has called His church to be."If [the church] is to stand against the gates of hell, it must know its own divine charter, its bond to Jesus Christ, and the 'Holy Spiritual' power of its calling. For the church to be the church in the year 2000, it must be more than 'seeker-friendly'; it must be 'Seeker-sent', thrust forth by the Lord to bear his gospel of the cross to the peoples." (from the preface).Dr. Clowney deals with both the theological foundations of the church, and many issues that are controversial in Christendom today. But his arguments are Biblical, and his tone is gracious. Give this book a chance, and let the Lord use it to give you a greater love for the bride of Christ, his body- the church!

This satirical, sad, and often poetic presentation of the human condition is described in three short stories (or three and a half), all linked by a protagonist of the same name, though the three time periods (past, present, future) are far from each other. The author chooses the name Billie Crusoe for the protagonist in all three(female in the first and last, male in the second), and the famous castaway's dilemma of survival hovers behind it all, with even a "Friday" character as a guide in the final episode. There are several themes, each poignantly presented so well by the author that the reader is pulled into the hopes and heartbreaks of the protagonist. All stories are linked by the flaw of organized humanity's need to destroy what has gone before in order to present and preserve a `new and better way'--- whether the dinosaur population of Earth in the first vignette, the stone gods of Easter Island in the second, or the wretched remnant of the free thinkers in the third. Within these settings lies a second theme, the need for love and reality of abandonment. At times this is stretched to the absurd--- whether that love lies in a better-than-human robot, in a dear friend, or in a mother. All in all, this is science fiction at its best, moving us to see the present and future, and ourselves in it, complete with our blatant flaws---and yet with constant hope for a better day, whatever the cost.

This was interesting, to say the least. It’s a tad belligerent with the overall message and I got really attached to characters in the beginning, which made it sad when the book delved into other time periods. Unique writing style though. You love it or you hate it, based on the reactions of my sci-fi analysis class.

The Stone Gods is an exceptional book. It is lyrical but dense, a deep love story that also discusses some fundamental ideas of humanity (freedom, maturity and humanity, sexuality and love) against the backdrop of a frighteningly possible future (a third world war resulting in corporate takeover and an untenable environment). It mixes these elements together impressively and in only 200 pages has considerable impact. I can understand why Atwood (who wrote "Oryx and Crake," another excellent novel about the 'end' of the world) likes this book so much.Many of the low reviews for this book appear to have wanted a potboiler. This is not a book read solely for the series of events that happen in it. Its lyricism is not limited to the writing, but extends to the portrayal of this world and its characters. The names of the characters (Billie Crusoe is later assisted by Friday, Cpt. Handsome, etc.) reflects this, as do some of their decisions, and complaints of "unbelievability" are misplaced.One low reviewer appears to be offended by the discussion of pedophilia and sex in the book. I think Winterson does a masterful job demonstrating a consumer culture's sexual appetites, and presents a believable progression of current society. Maybe a "degradation" to pedophilia would be more appropriate, since the protagonist is strongly opposed to the practice, and I think in part it is presented as a reflection of society's failure to mature past childhood. Second, this speculative fiction (as Atwood would say) appears to treat people as people in the purest sense, and has little interest in trapping them by being male or female. It is implied being straight is uncommon, although not necessarily a negative. This treatment is similar to Heinlein's "The Golden Globe" (public nudity also appears to not be a taboo anymore, etc.) Finally, this book has very little focus on physical sex, and sex acts that are described are brief and usually comic. If you are offended by same sex relationships then I hope you enjoy this book and after reading it appreciate they are like any other.

Not just a story...but literature (complete with discussion points at the end!). I liked it, very thoughtful, passionate, loving and unflinching.

Winterson's writing is what draws me in. This book is almost like a long poem, some parts are so lyrical. No particularly new ideas, but the familiar becomes new through the burnished satire and melancholy of her prose.The conclusion of the book is that regardless of our ability to learn over the span of a lifetime, over the span of generations we commit the same errors.But she is able to throw out neat social judgements, insights into the human condition, and nifty little one liners, such as the following:"Love is just Nature's way of getting one person to pay another person's bills."

I can't cross stitch as fast as I quilt, and was disappointed when I couldn't find some of these quilt designs to stitch a new one for my collection. Yea Amazon! I should know by now to just start here when looking for something!

I think I have a love hate relationship with this book. I have been eagerly waiting for it for months. It, undoubtedly, is a great collection of exercises, but that is it. The instructions for the stretches are ok, but not particularly detailed. My biggest issues are that there is nothing in the book tonshow you how to put them together and they dont show progressions or regressions. If you cant do that pose well, you just cant do it. I am really disappointed.

UPDATE 7/12/18: Got a bit farther into this book and I'm finding multiple 8 to 10 page sections that are repeated. So far pages 193-200 are repeated as well as pages 217-224. Pages 201-216 are nowhere to be found. Very disappointing that such a basic aspect of binding quality has been overlooked.I have mixed feelings about this book.There is no doubt it is comprehensive and it does show a wide range of stretches. However, it seems as though there are many that are duplicated between the different sections of the book. I would have preferred a book of 1,200 or even just 1,000 stretches without all the duplication.I would have also liked to see half-a-dozen programs that put a logical sequence of stretches together. That would increase the book's value immensely and give people a springboard for developing their own sequences of stretches.The basic quality of the book is very good. The printing is clear and crisp. The photos are well done and the models are attractive. From a graphic design point of view I'm not sure why their clothing had to be so drab. The paper is weighty and feels good in the hand.

Amazing book with every conceivable way to get flexible. I grew tired of downward dog and the repetition of yoga and truly love this book. Beautifully photographed and illustrated. Can’t beat it for the price.

The book does have a comprehensive listing of stretching exercises and other good information. I'll use it and I'm glad I got it. However. . .If a buyer is easily offended by suggestive crotch shots of women, then they might want to pass on this book. There are a number of such pictures here, and yes, while it is an exercise book, all of those pictures could have been done from the front or side--other angles--that would be less provocative. Interestingly, ONLY the women are presented with compromising crotch shots. None of the men are. Similar exercises demonstrated by men are all--100%--taken from a side or front angle. Someone needed to do better editing before releasing this book.

I had no idea how huge this book would be! It weighs about 3 lbs. it has every stretch you could ever do clearly laid out in a great format. Makes scanning simple and it’s easy to find the stretch needed for each body part. The example images are well done and this is a great book that I’ll probably use and refer to forever. Super solid buy.

This is a massive book on stretching! I never knew how inflexible I was until I received this book. My range of motion has significantly increased since I started incorporating stretching into my daily routine. I also attribute not needing lower back surgery to stretching and increasing my range of motion. Once I started stretching regulatory, my lower back pain decreased and pressure from a disc herniation on my sciatic nerve was relieved. Thank you Hollis for another great book!

I was excited for this book. It separates by: head and neck, shoulder, arm, back, chest, core, upper leg and lower leg.It lists stretches in abc order by name but just has instructions that you would find on the internet.The 1500 also include stretches w ball or other props which is why there are so many. (Quantity vs quality).I guess I was thinking I could turn to a section if I wanted to stretch a certain area and it would tell me why that stretch is benefitting that area (like if you had pain somewhere or wanted to work out a specific section; which ones produce best results etc).I sat for an hour and went through 25% of the book doing the stretches.I guess it would be nice to have some sets for certain areas.I included a pic from the book to help you get a better idea.So it's not one I'll be returning to often. But if I get bored one day, I'll go through some stretches.I guess I could've just used internet and googled shoulder, core stretches etc.I hate to be negative since books take a lot of time and effort; just wasn't what I was looking for.

I thought this book would tell you more specific about the area you are stretching (muscles) . Overall, I like the streches

I've read it 5 times already just to figure out pentominoes (you can buy your own; available through Walmart online), the secret code for private letters, the many Vermeer paintings that I didn't know as well as those I already loved, and to find again when I really should have understood how the story was going to end. I have also given a copy of this to all my grandchildren 8 and older.

One of my all-time favourite books as a child! Recently bought to read again after spending hours in front of Vermeer's A Lady Writing and was not disappointed. This is one of the most fascinating reads I've ever been through, through the coincidences and the puzzles and the mystery, and I could read it over and over again and never get tired. If you're someone who likes a good challenge to wrap your brain around, a whole lot of suspense, and well-written characters, absolutely go for this book. It's an incredible ride.

*Disclaimer: This is from an adult's perspective. A young reader might have a very different reaction to this book.I was so excited by this book when I started reading it -- it sets up interesting characters, an exciting mystery, and a visual puzzle for the reader to solve through the illustrations in the book. I loved the initial character development of Petra and Calder, two smart young people who have very different ways of thinking. It was fun using the pentomino code to decode the letters in the book, and to try to solve the hidden puzzle in the pictures. And I loved that the mystery was based around art history. But as I read on, I became disappointed. The character development fell flat. The visual puzzle was not quite as challenging as I'd hoped (though still satisfying). And, most disappointing of all, the mystery was really not as exciting as initially promised (trying to turn the nitpicky art historical issue of painting attribution into a big international scandal just didn't work for me).Despite these disappointments, I still believe this book has something special to offer, with its unique approach, and its two main characters who really think about the world around them, and use all their intelligence and intuition to solve the mystery.

This was required reading for my 10 y.o. son’s GT class. He’s an avid reader, but had a tough time engaging in this book. Just not his cup of tea. He loves the Wings of Fire Series.

On paper (which I guess is a phrase that doesn't work quite as well in regard to books), the concept of this book thrills me! Geometric puzzles, art history clues, and natural phenomenons? I love it all! And even when I first read this book, I was totally gripped by the story and all the layers of mystery and curiosity. It was in my second reading that this house of cards flattened out on me.This book frustrated me much in the same way that Harry Potter has. The author just takes too many liberties to allow the reader to feel part of the story. It feels unfair when an author gets to have a surprise hidden panel in the wall at the end of the story. I don't know if this is so much true for all genres. A mystery, however, should be tight. It needs to feel like a completed puzzle at the end - either leaving you feeling satisfied that you called it right, or amazed at how well it all came together. When it feels like a jumble that nobody could have pieced together except the author (and even appears that the author took pains to make it more complicated than necessary) it just doesn't work. In some cases of literature (and art!), when you think "I could have made that," it is a compliment on how easy the creator made it look. In the case of Chasing Vermeer, and knowing full well my limitations as a writer, thinking "I could have written that" is not a good thing.For a book club book, I think this will still be a delight to young readers. If the club is given all the extra ingredients to completely lose themselves in a world of mathematical and artistic mystery, fall in love with Chasing Vermeer. I have only read this book aloud with students. To independently read it as a book club, students would probably need to be older and have strategies for figuring out the references the book makes.

Mystery, intrigue, possibly stolen art, puzzles within puzzles, very intelligent kids, an incredible teacher, and Chicago: What could be better? Blue Balliet has written a thought-provoking novel with interesting characters, set against a richly diverse cultural backdrop. Each of my sons loved this book. I loved it. Brett Helquist's illustrations are masterful, and they are essential to the story. Buy this book!

I tried loving it, but it felt like it was too old of a book for kids and to young of content for middle school students.

Erin Taylor Young’s first book, Surviving Henry: Adventures in Loving a Canine Catastrophe, was a delightful and inspiring read, so I couldn’t wait to dig into this new release, and it didn’t disappoint. With her unique take on the world and her witty humor, Young deals with the perils of living with a husband, two growing sons, and a canine catastrophe named Henry. My favorite story involved a lump of a rising bread dough and yet another trip to the vet (where the dog, I think, must be greeted with shouts of “Henry!” reminiscent of those for “Norm” from Cheers.)I give this book five stars for the superb writing, for the many times I laughed out loud, and for the moments when tears filled my eyes. You’ll love it.

The only negative thing I can say about this book is that it's over!! I was having so much fun reading it that I didn't want it to end!! I have been really sick for the past few years and The Lord knew I needed a few good laughs and He gave them to me!!! Henry's antics are hilarious!! Again Erin has a wonderful way of making you feel like you are right there watching all this happen!!! I laughed so hard that I had tears rolling down my face on so many occasions!!! Like I said, I just wished that it didn't end!!! Hopefully Erin will write another book. She is a very talented writer with an absolutely crazy funny dog!!! God has really blessed her!!

Owning a boxer is definitely not for the feint of heart. A better friend can't be found. The stories in this book are so true! They are the craziest breed that God created. So loving and affectionate that it's hard to stay mad at them when they act like the 2 year olds they are. This is my awesome boxer!

Having been raised with boxers and loving their loyal, playful, quirky, goofy, loving personalities, I can relate to every incidence Erin Young described. This fun read was full of nostalgia. I didn't find Erin's way of writing as enjoyable as I had hoped. Henry, being a boxer, is a natural comedian. Erin needs to work a little harder at her delivery. Still I did find the story to hold some laugh-out-loud moments and fun reminders of our own "nutcases".

Absolutely love this book. I was walking through a gift shop and saw a book with a Boxer and a title Surviving Henry. I looked at my mom and laughed. I told her it should be called Surviving Brutus. I have a Boxer named Brutus. It hasn't always been easy. After reading Surviving Henry I found myself more in love with the crazy Brutus I had. I felt I understood my Brutus a little more. When I found out Erin had written another book about Henry I knew I had to read it. As I got to the end I cried because even though Brutus is only 3 I know he won't always be around and I need to treasure the time I have with him.

If you are a Boxer owner, this is a MUST-READ! Erin's style of writing is par none. While you might enjoy reading about Henry's adventures if you're not a Boxer owner, you will REALLY enjoy this if you have ever had a Boxer.

We own a boxer so this book makes me laugh and cry at Henry's antics. Erin is such a good writer - I love reading her books about Henry.

Still Surviving Henry tells of the how a boxer puppy can dsrive a person crazy. His owner, Erin Young, writes well and tells the hilarious stories of what unpredictable situations Henry gets into. Since I have 2 dogs, I could really relate to Erin as she tries to do right by Henry.

This is an excellent resource. There is so much you can do to make it much likely that you will enjoy greater mental clarity, more joy and more energy as we age. If you want to be playing with your grandchildren and great grandchildren in your 80s, 90s and beyond, this book is for you. Learn why our brains can get into trouble, and most importantly, learn what you can do to protect your brain and keep your vitality as you age.

I found this book very helpful for not only improving my poorly maintained brain (my bad choices assisted by too many medications & supplements) but also helping with other chronic conditions. Our traditional medical methods can work wonders but when it turns into a pack of specialists with different opinions of what is wrong, healing just plain stops. Because Dr. Sharlin addresses the entire picture of the patient, the entire system improves (yeah!). The other authors in the book also have fabulous insights for systemic healing. At least one of those authors has been 'over the top' helpful. They helped me find a practitioner in my area.

Dr. Sharlin is not only an incredible physician, but an excellent writer (a rare gift indeed!. This is a very enjoyable read with very practical tools that can be applied to optimize brain health! Dr. Sharlin applies a functional medicine approach to neurological disease with the goal of addressing not only diet and lifestyle factors that certainly play a role in chronic disease but also by considering the patient as a whole including antecedent events that are at the root cause of a disorder. When upwards of 80% of chronic disease is preventable, it is refreshing to read a book written by a compassionate doctor who maintains hope that we can effect change by empowering patients with the appropriate tools for wellness. Well done Dr. Sharlin congratulations on a most excellent book!

This book was very helpful and usefull. I plan to take the author's advice and apply it to my own life. However, it was as he called it a little too sciencey at times. I think the info in it would be useful to everyone!

Dr. Sharlin has put together a fantastic science-backed and practical resource for people who want to optimize their brain health. I really enjoyed his weaving the core concepts of Functional Medicine with neurology. Its also packed with cutting-edge and straightforward tips on how to keep your brain healthy. Terrific read. I’m in my early 40’s and found this book extremely educational and useful for my future neurological heath. I also bought a book for my mother and one for my father and they both absolutely love it.

Dr. Sharlin is an out of the box thinker and a pioneer in an age where are more questions than answers. His teaching can not only control the symptoms of chronic disease but very well change their trajectory. That is to say, change the course of pathology. That is an utterly profound statement, let that sink in. He is not only a board certified neurologist but a functional medicine phyiscian. His approach to disease is understanding the whole patient, not only "matching a pill to the ill". If you are willing to commit to playing an active role in your health you won't be disappointed.
