This is the second edition of Chevallier's The Encyclopedia of Medicinal Plants (LJ 12/96). Although the title has changed, the format and contents are substantially the same. Careful comparison of the two editions, though, reveals that the text of the second edition has been revised to reflect the latest herbal research and includes some herbs not mentioned in the earlier book, such as cat's claw. The new edition also addresses the issues of quality control and the safe use of herbal remedies. But as with the original, initial and final chapters address the development of herbal medicine, world herbal traditions, and home remedies. Sandwiched between this material is an alphabetical listing by Latin name of 550 of the most commonly used individual herbs. One hundred key plants are given a full-page spread outlining their habitat and cultivation, related species, key constituents and actions, research, traditional and current uses, parts used, key preparations, and self-help uses. In a separate alphabetical list, an additional 450 plants are covered in less detail. A fine bibliography and index complete the book. As with all DK publications, the encyclopedia is lavishly illustrated with high-quality color captioned photographs and focus boxes. Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs (1998) is a similar title directed to a different audience. Absolutly love this book! The pictures are clear and detailed, the index and illness guide in the back is very helpful. I do wish they had more pictures of plants. For example the book will have 10 plants on a page and only show pictures of 2 plants (And they're always the super common plants, which bothers me. I would rather have detailed imagery of plants that aren't that common) but I guess that is me being but picky. I also am going to be picky and complain that some of the plants in the book i feel shouldn't be in there like corn, lettuce, ans carrots. There wasn't much information to be given so I feel it was a waste of time and energy to even add them when they could have used the space on plants like chinese mug wort, regular mothers wort or lavandin.Lastly, I only found it with one plant, but it had a very tiny detail wrong. It said it wasn't edible when it actually is and is enjoyed to this day in italy as a common side. But again me being nit picky. I really love this book it is my go-to. It's really wonderful that's why, even with my complaints, I gave it 4 stars. I would give it 4 and a half if I could.

Very clear and decisive! I have been looking for an herbal book that gives lots of information and helps to see, which parts are used, how to cultivate it, what is the uses of the herbs, and wow this book has everything I was looking for. I thought it was a bit expensive and I don't usually buy books over $20, but this was so worth it!! I am glad I got this book. It came in today with the rest of my order and I haven't been able to put it down. I am going to start taking notes on it. I have an autoimmune disease called Crohn's and well they haven't been able to treat me with conventional medications because I am allergic to them in one way or another it seem. No matter what we try. I am now getting really into herbal medicine because this is my last resort to help me. So this book will be well used. Thank you to the seller it had arrived in great shape, and I am extremely please with it. I would definitely say if people really want some good information about herbs this is definitely the book to have on hand and as a reference guide. I love the book!!! It's going to be a great help!!!

I have numerous books on medicinal herbs. This is the one I go back to again and again. It is clearly written and informative. I don't usually write reviews, but I felt compelled to after a few years of opening this book up almost daily.

The pictures are very detailed, and I was able to use the pictures and the very detailed descriptions to identify some of these herbs growing in my own yard! I have also been able to find some new uses for many of the herbs I already had at home. The book is easy to use, you can look up herbs with several different indexes by herb itself or for intended uses such as if you want to see what herbs you can use for a stomach ache. I have recommended it to friends who are also looking into more natural means of health and health support.

If you like learning about herbal medicine this book is very valuable. There is so much great information in this book. You'll learn habitat and cultivation, Related species, key constitutes, key actions, research, traditional & current uses, parts used and key preparations - this book is a wealth of information!! I bought this for an intro herbalism course I was taking. I love this book for its wonderful photographs. this book is great for those just starting to learn about herbs and their preparations. I love the part in the back where there are basic instructions for making tinctures, salves/ balms, decoctions, infusions and so on....lovely basic herb book. Good for a reference / learning material.

Although I was born and raised in that part of West Virginia where the New an Gauley rivers are located I was vaguely aware of the whitewater each of the beautiful rivers contained ,oh we floated Some of the New on fishing trips which would last for up to a week, but when I was growing up back then ( 50's an early 60's) running the Rapids on those rivers was unheard of and after I left home to join the military in 1964 all of this completely left my mind for I was off to see the world,the subject of running the New an Gauley didn't surface again until probably 1989-90 when a group of people I was working with mentioned going up to West Virginia to run some Rapids when I ask where they were going they said "Fayette Station" ,but that's another story,I purchased Jay's book Because I felt that I could an would learn something about that phenomenon that swept my home state back years ago and to a certain extent is continuing today ,I wasn't disappointed it's an excellent read,one which once started is hard to put down !!!!

Short and easy to read - but very interesting history of the New and Gauley Rivers. Lots of pics as well. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.

Great Book. Very informative. Originally bought it to get technical advice on the New. Instead it is more of a history lesson. Still a very interesting read.

I have paddle the New River numerous times and always see the rafts and stay clear of them but I never gave much thought about their history and the history of the sport. Very interesting reading and I am looking forward to paddling the New again. Thanks for writing this all down. Local history like this tends to disappear after a generation. It’s good to have a record of it all.

Tim Deagan has written for Make: magazine, Nuts and Volts, and other technical publications. He is a licensed Texas Flame Effects Operator and the Flame and Safety Coordinator for the Austin Mini Maker Faire. A long, long time ago, I remember being given a set of leather punches or dies. They were intended to be used to stamp patterns into leather. I don’t recall ever having anything more than leather scraps to work on, but it was fun while the excitement lasted. I am still attracted to hand tooled leather goods. I admire the craftsmanship and artistry, recognizing that I lack the patience to pursue something like this. Tim Deagan’s somewhat odd tome on using CNC machines, 3D printers and other devices, like craft cutting machines has reawakened my old interest in the form of lust. Now I want a CNC machine and a 3D printer. (I already have the cutting machine.) Ultimately “Modern Leatherwork for Makers” has little practical value to me. Despite the addition of modern technology, this very well-illustrated book drives home once again that leatherworking is a hand-craft and now I not only lack the patience, but the manual dexterity. Deagan provides a thorough basic introduction to leatherworking. I found this to be informative and also convincing, in the sense of making it clear that leatherwork is something for me to admire, not to create. He then goes on to describe how CNC machines and 3D printers can be brought to the craft. These equally thorough basic introductions convinced me that I need a 3D printer soon – and, quite possibly, a CNC machine. Deagan provides seven projects illustrating concepts. One of them, a combination hatband for a Steampunk-style top hat and action cam, opened my eyes and my mind to something I have long wanted to try. Each of the projects is fascinating in its own right for me, as Deagan demonstrated how the machines can be used. Deagan’s writing style is excellent. He is thorough without becoming pedantic. His attention to detail is very impressive. Even though I will not pursue leatherworking as an advocation, I am indebted to Me. Deagan for an excellent introduction to the practical use of CNC machines and 3D printers.Jerry

The author of this book, Tim Deagan, however, is a bit of a modern Renaissance man when it comes to making things and trying new technology. His new book is a refreshing blend of (1) time-proven, basic techniques for cutting, grooving, gouging, beveling, edging and joining leather, (2) using hobby-level CNC machines to cut pieces and laser-drill holes, and (3) using 3D printers to impart decorative designs onto leather surfaces. Even if you don't want to work with CNC machines and 3D printers, you can learn some good, basic leatherworking skills from this book. "Modern Leatherwork for Makers" is written clearly, well organized and well illustrated. So which is better, "old-school leatherworking techniques" or "modern digital fabrication methods"? Tim Deagan admires the careful artistry of those who pursue the time-honored approaches. But he believes modern technology is bringing new capabilities and possibilities to leatherworking, as well. I figured that this would expect some background in the maker world of tools, so 2d+1 CNC machines and 3d additive printing, and then would try to introduce leatherworking and some ways to use the maker tools in leatherworking. But there was I think too much assumed, on both the maker side and the leather side. I could see some interesting projects in here, but a first read did not teach me much in the way of technique. Perhaps if I knew traditional leatherwork? Maybe that would have helped. With a different background, your mileage might vary (a lot).

This is an excellent how to. I love that it includes the most basic leather buying terminology. It covers basic leatherworking as well as using the 3d printer and CNC machines, with software, to take it up a notch. Several projects are discussed that are very in demand and modern, like steampunk, cell phone cases, shoulder bags, ect. Cutting and joining leather, basic tools, rivets, grommets, dyes, lubricants- it's pretty much all there for the basics. The book has resources too, from free software that you can use, to patterns to download, supply houses for leather and supplies, and websites of interest to makers.It's well illustrated, easy to understand, but do expect some work learning to use the software and machines. The book does facilitate that though.I'm not sure I'd gift this book to anyone, because of the skill level involved, but I think it's an excellent guide for a cosplayer, fashion designer, or leatherworker who wants to take their work to a professional level with modern projects.

The book itself is a great reference for practitioner. Easy and simple to read.However, the seller scratch the word Indian Edition and covered with barcode stickers as you can see in the picture. I’m purchasing the original edition as stated by the seller. Sold by Infinityy but it seems I can’t find the seller in Amazon right now.Slight mishape of the hardcover may be due to the shipping which is fine with me.

I got this book when one of my kids expressed hurt feelings that I got Bradley's other book for parents called "Yes, Your Teen is Crazy." Fair is fair, right? We all liked the cover illustration a lot. Well, neither of my teens has read the book so far. I think the quantity of content could be a bit overwhelming. I think it's a great book though. I love the author's writing style a lot. You just have to know yourself or your kid to know if you/they will read a hefty, nearly 400 page book (unlike Harry Potter which both my kids delighted in reading).The book is divided into three parts:1) You Right Now (body, brain, psychological development and craziness)2) Your World (culture, parents, family, peers, school)3) Your Day to Day Life (made up of 30 topics in alphabetical order from aggression and appearance to working.)The way I see it, if you or a kid you know can get a bit of help from reading any part of the book, it's worth its weight in gold (like what to say when a kid is getting pressured to do something she doesn't want to). When my kids were little, I got a parenting tip to have a home rich with resources. I still try to keep it that way because you never know what they'll pick up and get into. This book is going to stay on my shelf as a resource for me my kids. Recommended!Edit, seven months later: Yes! As I hoped, the book has been discreetly picked up and read in sections that are relevant. :-)

This book touches on almost every topic adolescents will encounter in their teen years. Dr. Bradley's writing method is easy for anyone to read and understand using examples and a touch of humor to lighten the boring seriousness some teens may find in these sort of books. I recommend parents read this as well. If you read it from the prespective of you as a teen,I believe it will help you remember those years and be able to relate and connect with your teen on a much deeper level improving your relationship.

I bought Mr. Bradley's "Yes, Your Teen is Crazy" and found it filled with wonderful humorous advise on how to successfully survive my son's teen years without (Me) ending up in jail. I was hoping to give something to my son to enlighten him a liitle as to why we do the things we do as parents. I put this book in his room.....I was encouraged that it didn't immediately make its way to the trash can. After 2 months, it is now on his bookcase - I'm happy with the baby steps.

My fear was that my daughter would not be into this book, because important books such as this are not easy or exciting to read. My daughter picked it up from among many books I got for me and her and kept on reading all the interesting topics (at least for her) and kept it around to read more. It is fascinating to see her not glued to the computer but reading this book on and off and keeping it next to her bed. Now my baby, I mean my daughter actually gives advices to her friends using tips from this book.Other than the simple and likable way of discussing sensitive topics; Dr. Bradley redeems parents' dignity in their kids' eyes and explain parents' points of view to teens without lecturing them. This book is one of a kind that doesn't focus on preaching and lecturing teens, but addresses their developing minds from their perspective and helps restore the connection between teens and parents. Dr. Bradley is a saint, at least in my eyes!

My son likes this book and that is a compliment from a 13 year old who hates to read.

A lot of this did not apply to my daughter, so I skimmed a lot . I did learn a few helpful behaviors from this book.

I LOVED "Yes, Your Teen is Crazy" and was looking forward to "... parents are crazy" to be a good tool for our kids to read. It is a TON of information - too much - or it's just presented wrong.I would just recommend having everyone read "your teen is crazy" ... because that book does a good job of explaining the perspective of both teen and parent.
