Oh, I so dislike being the voice of dissension. I had such high expectations for this book. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.The story is written in first person, from the husband's perspective. For a man with psychopathic tendencies who lives on the edge, he is remarkably dull and complacent. Honestly, he bored me.The wife is rigid and robotic. For reasons I don't understand, he finds her militant personality sexy. But there is absolutely nothing sexy about their relationship.Pacing is slow, largely because the husband is clueless. He doesn't ask questions and doesn't want to know details, and so the murder aspect of this story remains on the periphery. We spend a lot of time with him screwing up his kids, making excuses to leave his job, and dealing with his obsessive thoughts about what his wife is doing with "their" victims.I saw the first twist coming early on. I kept reading in the hopes that something would shake the husband out of his stupor. When something finally did, I just didn't care anymore.*I received an advance copy from the publisher, via NetGalley.*

This book will mess with your mind...A LOT.You're sucked right in to the twisted and crazy lifestyle of Millicent and her husband. While they appear to be the typical suburban household with 2 growing kids and 2 jobs, their "dates" are anything but normal.While twisting and turning in their messed up psyche, you're also trying to reconcile that they are your neighbors...they are your tennis coach, your realtor...It's a game of cat and mouse, but throughout, you're not quite sure who the cat is or who the mouse is. This book will make you second guess everything at least twice and then, when you think you've got it, another mind bender will show up.While it's a fast read, I think mainly it's quick because you want to find out what happens next. There is a well developed mystery within the story and fairly decent backstory information so that you can try and figure out how Millicent and her husband function every day.This is the first book that I've read of Downing's and it left me speechless and happy, all wrapped in to a crazy, confused package. I loved the intensity and while I'm unsure if I "liked" the book, I definitely liked the style.

4.5 STARS!!This edge of your seat debut novel by Samantha Downing is a total crowd pleaser. Fast-paced and compulsive to read, My Lovely Wife is a story about a bored husband and wife who decide to shake things up to keep it interesting. I won’t get too into the summary of the story- you get the gist from the blurb. I love that the book was written from the husband’s point of view. His inner monologue is written in such a way that keeps you turning pages way past your bed time.Downing has an interesting way of being creepy and disturbing without being graphic or gritty. The implications woven throughout the story are enough to paint quite a picture of this devious couple. She shares just enough detail to hook you but leaves so much up to the imagination. And even though this is a debut, Downing makes a splash with not only her story telling, but also with her quality of writing. She writes a great story. I didn’t particularly care for either the husband or the wife- but that’s also one of my favorite characteristics of the best psychological thrillers. These characters are messed up, twisted, and completely deplorable. Not only did I feel like I knew this husband and wife (they’re you neighbors, tennis partners, your realtors, your kids’ friends’ parents) but their kids added just enough drama and intrigue to add complex layers that seemed to jump right off the page.I have to mention the ending. I LOVED it. It was perfect. I didn’t see it coming and make sure you read to the very last line of the story. It just might make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand at attention. I’m definitely looking forward to more from Samantha Downing because while this is a fantastic debut, I can tell she’s only going to get better from here!

With her Scrap-Basket series of books, Kim Brackett has proven she can maintain a fresh approach to color and construction using pre-cuts. Scrap-Basket Beauties was on my Wish List for several months, and I love it. As with the two Brackett books I already own, I can't decide which project to make first. Not only are the quilt tops fun to assemble, but the blocks themselves are clever, straight-forward, and stash-friendly.Beginners will have lots to choose from here. For example, the first quilt "Sanctuary" is a basic single 4-patch mixed with three 2-stacks in one block. Put the blocks together just so and you've got a nice running chain and LOTS of opportunities for matching seams. Want to move up to triangles? The folded-corner technique can give the illusion of more geometry, and it is used frequently in this book. "Six Degrees South Of The Equator" is a perfect example and no one has to know there is not a single triangle in it.The quilt on the cover is "Hourglass". And I thought it was a "Bow Tie" variation. It's just one more example of how Brackett can make a block look more devious than it really is. Just sew two strips together and use the included cutting guide pattern to skew your cuts. Like stars? Check out "Star Blossoms", with its built-up block borders and soothing aqua background. Love lattice? "Beachside Bungalow" has succulent fabrics set against an unusual background color. Brackett is fearless when it comes to selecting background colors that are anything but muslin and various shades of cream.Some photos show the quilting better than others, and there are no alternate color options. And even though the publishing industry has quite a few books that utilize pre-cuts, Bracket's imagination keeps me coming back to her books. Kim Brackett is 3-for-3 in my, um ... book.

I needed this book for a quilting class I was taking. The instructions are very easy to understand and love that it's in color. I'm making the Star Blossoms quilt and it's coming along very nicely. Looking forward to making the other quilts in this book!FYI: For those that are thinking of purchasing this book. There are two errors on page 24. Go to http://shopmartingale.com/corrections/b1157_corrections.pdf and print out and insert the corrected page in your copy of the book.

I love this series of books. The designs are very attractive and easy to piece and the completed quilts look more difficult than they are. Kim Brackett has 3 books using 2 1/2 inch wide scraps. As a long timer quilter I have lots of scraps to use up. The best part for me was multiple patterns use the same size pieces so I can cut several quilts at a time. Great community quilts.

I have all her books and made one of them for my grandsons wedding. Her instructions are clear and concise and the quilt turned out to be one of my favorites. I used only my brown scraps as that was the color he wanted. It is now one of my favorite quilts. Love all her books and now waiting for her to author one on 5" squares since I have so many, but so far she hasn't done that. I just wish she were my sister !

Love the patterns in this book! Perfect for the 2 1/2 inch jelly rolls or your scrap basket. I've been cutting up my scraps into 2 1/2 inch strips as they accumalate . I got this books to use with my scrap saving system. The patterns are gorgeous. The directions are clear. I find the quilts easy to piece, but look so complicated when their done. I have Kim's other book. Scrap Basket Sensations. Kim is one of my favorite quilting Guru's. I really enjoy her work.

Love that Kim gives you option of using your scraps instead of precuts or yardage. I use a scrap saver system and am always looking for ways to use my stash

Great Book. Our sewing group has started on a second pattern from this book. I wish the print was a little larger for the layout, but the designs are great. It is necessary to have the layouts enlarged in order to get the directions correct. Glad I purchased the book and would recommend it.

The winding path the second half takes, while it does not directly advance the objectives evident in the first, nonetheless provides several instructive examples of how Anderson’s distinctive take on science plays out in actual political, scientific, and philosophical controversies.My biggest gripe is that the book feels slapped together. Many of its 10 sections appear to be ad hoc devices minted solely to impose some semblance of structure on its 55 essays. Several of the later sections contain primarily book reviews. Although Anderson does use the occasion of reviewing a book to expound on his own views, these sections are thin compared with earlier, more substantive sections. The text contains a larger than average number of typographical errors, further reinforcing the unpolished feel. Sparse annotations leave the provenance of many of the essays unclear, and Anderson’s perfunctory introductions to each section give the impression that he set out to write a popularly accessible book articulating his distinctive view of science, only to discover that, in aggregate, he already had. That said, the unmanicured quality that results conveys a sharper sense of Anderson’s views and their development than a more polished work might have. Although a lay reader might find its meandering off-putting, historians and physicists will appreciate the way this book chronicles the evolution of one of the sharpest critical voices in American science.

The Nobel Prize-winning physicist Philip Anderson is one of those rare species - a scientist who is not only world-class in his own field but who seems capable of saying something interesting about virtually every topic under the sun. His career at Bell Labs overlapped with the lab's most illustrious period and apart from his prizewinning work in solid-state physics, Anderson has made groundbreaking contributions to at least two other diverse fields - particle physics and the epistemology of science. In this book he holds forth on a wide variety of subjects ranging from postmodernism to superconductivity. The chapters consist of book reviews, commemorative essays, transcripts of talks, opinion pieces and a variety of other writings over the past five decades. In every chapter there are at least a few rather deep statements which deserve close scrutiny.The book is roughly divided into three parts. The first part details Anderson's views on the history and philosophy of science including his own field - solid-state physics. The second part talks about Anderson's reminiscences and thoughts on his scientific peers, mostly in the form of book reviews that he has written for various magazines and newspapers. The third part deals with science policy and politics and the fourth is dedicated to "attempts" (in Anderson's own rather self-effacing words) at popularizing science.Some of the chapters are full of scientific details and can be best appreciated by physicists but there's also a lot of fodder for the layman in here. A running thread through several essays is Anderson's criticism of ultra-reductionism in science which is reflected in the title of the book, "More and Different". Anderson's basic viewpoint is that more is not just quantitatively but qualitatively different from less. In 1972 he made a splash by discussing in an article in Science magazine how "higher-level" sciences are based on their own fundamental laws which cannot be reduced to physics. In the book he details this philosophy through several examples from physics, chemistry, biology and psychology. He does not deny the great value of reductionism in the development of modern science but he incisively explores its limits.Other chapters contain critiques of the latest fads in physics including string theory. Anderson bemoans string theory's lack of connection to concrete experiment and its failure to predict unique, robust solutions. He makes it clear that string theory is really mathematics and that it fails to adhere to the tried and tested philosophy of science which has been successful for almost five hundred years. Other chapters have insightful commentary on the role of mathematics in physics, Bayesian probability and physics at Bell Labs. A particularly amusing essay critiquing the current funding situation in the United States proposes a hypothetical alternative history of quantum mechanics in the US, where scientific pioneers like Dirac and Heisenberg may not have been able to do groundbreaking research because of the publish-or-perish environment and the dominance of the old guard.There's also some valuable material in here about the sociology of science. This is exemplified by an especially insightful and detailed chapter on scientific fraud where Anderson explores the reasons why some scientists commit fraud and others don't expose it as widely as they should. In Anderson's opinion the most valuable method to expose fraud is to ask whether it destroys what he calls the "seamless web of science" - the existing framework of fundamental laws and principles that allow relatively little room for revolutionary breakthroughs on a regular basis. In many cases the web's integrity is clearly not consistent with the new finding, and the rare case where the web can subsume the new discovery and still stay intact leads us into genuinely new scientific territory. He also takes scientists to task for failing to point out the destruction of this seamless web by apparently far-reaching but fundamentally flawed new discoveries. In other chapters Anderson also comes down hard on the postmodernism distortion of science, critiquing such philosophers as Nancy Cartwright and upholding the views of debunkers like Alan Sokal. He also has some valuable commentary on science policy, especially on Star Wars and missile defense. Other writers have written much more detailed critiques of such programs, but Anderson succinctly demonstrates the limitations of the concept using commonsense thinking (The bottom line: decoys can easily foil the system and a marginal improvement by the offense will result in a vastly increased cost for the defense).Finally, the book contains mini sketches of some of Anderson's peers who happened to be some of the great scientific minds of the twentieth century. Anderson reviews books by and about Richard Feynman, Murray Gell-Mann, Stuart Kauffman, Stephen Hawking, Roger Penrose, John Bardeen and William Shockley among others. I happen to agree with him that books by scientists like Hawking, Penrose and Greene, while fascinating to read, paint a rather biased picture of physics and science. For one thing, they usually oversell the whole reductionist methodology in their constant drive to advertise the "Theory of Everything". But more importantly, they make it sound like particle physics and cosmology are the only games in town worth thinking about and that everything else in physics is done on the periphery. This is just not true. As Anderson makes it clear, there are lots of fields of physics including condensed matter physics, biophysics and non-linear dynamics which contain questions as exciting, fundamental and research-worthy as anything else in science. As just one example, classical physics was considered a staid old backwater of the physics world until chaos burst upon the scene. It's also clear, as was the case with chaos, that some of the most exciting advances will come from non-physicists. There are foundational phenomena and rich dividends to be mined from the intersection of physics with other fields in the twenty-first century.Anderson's book might precisely be the kind of writing ignored by the public because they are too taken with the Hawkings, Greenes and Randalls. To those folks this volume would be an essential and healthy antidote. There's something in there for everyone, and it makes it clear that science still presents infinite horizons on every level. After all, more is different.
