Review

Both the Torah and the New Testament instruct, 'love your neighbor as yourself.' This book’s stories of suffering and redemption show how real people live that commandment. Susan Greenfield has compiled stories and reflections that inspire, uplift and challenge. Sacred Shelter shares lessons about the power of love and perseverance, and about how, when we extend respect, kindness and hope to people our society rejects and scorns, we take huge steps closer to a more just and love-filled world for everyone. (Brian Purnell, Geoffrey Canada Associate Professor of Africana Studies and History, Bowdoin College)It is rare that one book provides a gripping, honest, unapologetic look at the lives and perspectives of individuals experiencing homelessness. Sacred Shelter does just that demanding a reader's immediate attention. After bearing witness to the truths captured in this book I was moved to deepen my intention to fight for affordable housing across the nation. (Afua Atta-Mensah, Esq., Executive Director, Community Voices Heard)Homelessness is not hopelessness–at least for the 13 individuals whose stories are told in Sacred Shelter. Personal empowerment; supportive community; God’s gracious presence are highlighted as key to these success stories of transformation and growth. The editor sensitively and capably allows these individuals’ own reality and narrative to emerge through their stories. (Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York)A powerful look beyond statistics and policy proposals, into the stories of people who have experienced homelessness, in their own words. These painful, honest, and ultimately hopeful stories--paired with reflections from religious leaders--inspire the reader to greater empathy and commitment. (Rabbi Jill Jacobs, Executive Director, T'ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights)

In Sacred Shelter New York is the place where a community of resilient, remarkable individuals are yearning for a voice. Through frank, honest interviews, this book follows the lives of thirteen people who experienced homelessness and graduated from an interfaith life skills empowerment program. They share traumas from their youth, the devastation of homelessness, and the healing they discovered through community and faith. Interspersed among their stories are reflections from directors, clerics, and volunteers involved in the life skills program. In powerful narrative form, Sacred Shelter represents a demographic group that continues to endure systemic injustice and marginalization. By listening to individual stories, we are urged to confront our own woundedness and uncover our desire for human connection, a sacred shelter on the other side of suffering. For a Readers’ Guide to Sacred Shelter Visit https://fordham.bepress.com/soc/3/Susan Celia Greenfield, Professor of English at Fordham University, is author of Mothering Daughters: Novels and the Politics of Family Romance, and of many essays and short stories.

The book tells the life stories of people experiencing some form of lasting recovery from homelessness and who then committed to helping others in need. The hope is for the stories to offer a positive example to others in need, and to motivate readers to work for social justice and change. As such, the book is a powerful source of hope. With rising rents and house prices across the country, and homelessness on the rise, the book is a timely, compassionate, and hopeful read.

How many of us have seen people who are homeless and looked away, not knowing what to say or do? I often did. Then I saw a woman walking up the street approach someone who had all her belongings in a shopping cart. When she then passed by me, I asked her what she had said to the homeless woman. She answered, "I asked how I could help." SACRED SHELTER is a collection of life stories from 13 people who became homeless, from a corporate executive to someone neglected from birth. The stories transform them into vibrant human beings, with deep insights and feelings. This book is for everyone who cares about others, and who would like to know more about those who are homeless, and how we can actually make a difference in their lives. A favorite quote from "The Ways We Touch" by Miller Williams says it all: "Have compassion for everyone you meet, even if they don't want it. What seems conceit, bad manners, or cynicism is always a sign of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen. You do not know what wars are going on down there where the spirit meets the bone."

Scared Shelters consists of 13 powerful and amazing stories that these individuals overcame homelessness for different reasons. This book enlighten someone about different reasons why we can become homeless. It’s not just the lower class or the middle class becomes homeless but anyone can. The domestic violence story is gruesome and shows power and strength in this individual to make sure her children were protected and find a home for them. I encourage you to buy and read and share with friends and family.

This book consists of 13 interviews with people who were formerly homeless. The enormity of the pain each of these people have gone through is incalculable, but, through their own individual voices, the stories reveal how each has found his/her own unique strengths, made connections, developed relationships and created bonds of love. The book underscores the strengths – indeed the salvation – found in community. I fervently hope (believe) it will make anyone tempted to judge people they see on the street, to think twice and then - not do so. Because these stories are also extraordinary in making plain their larger backdrop: the mammoth structural forces working against vulnerable people’s forging even minimal successes out of their challenges. Among its through lines are a deep indictment of our society’s laissez faire stance when faced with the entrenchment of homelessness; its contents form a series of eloquent pleas to change that. The editor is a consummate interviewer. It is not easy to develop oral histories that do justice to the complexities of the lives of those interviewed, and this author knows well how to frame people’s unique stories and let them breathe on their own. Her profound respect, compassion, admiration and utter lack of condescension for the people whose life struggles form this book permeate every page, and it is a credit to her skills that we feel those things, too.

This book encourages anyone who is going through anything at any stage of their lives to have hope. It may appear that being homeless is the worst thing that any human being can go through and it is. However, these inspirational stories allow anyone who read this book to learn significant lessons in being persistent, letting go and letting God and most importantly, reaching back to help others now with a greater understanding. When you read it, keep a copy and pass another one along and let the stories of these thirteen individuals and the reflections from mentors teach that we are all our brother's keepers.

The thirteen people who offer their stories here share how they found insight, compassion, faith, and courage in the face of enormous struggle and loss. Each chapter is a deep lesson in what resilience looks like and the enormous power of community. By sharing the truth of their lives, the book's contributors movingly call each of us to commit to the fight for the fundamental and sacred right to shelter for all.

This book is not easy to read. The stories shared are difficult and often painful. You will emerge from this book changed and will see the world around you more compassionately.

If you want to understand the complex problem of homelessness you must read Susan Greenfield’s Sacred Shelter. This important book is essential reading both for its insightful introduction, which discusses the multiple issues of homelessness with astonishing clarity and depth, and for the powerful stories told by thirteen people who have experienced homelessness and are now living independently
