Texas is such a large and diverse state (stereotypes to the contrary), it really deserves a more complete guide than this one. This book covers the highlights, but don't expect detailed treatment of any particular topic or place.All the major cities are covered, albeit thinly, but interesting places in between are left out. There's summary discussion of important natural attractions such as Big Bend National Park and The Hill Country.Listings of hotels and restaurants are selective, but the ones that are included are good.Bottom line is this: What you get here is good, but the book really needs to be twice as large as it is. This is really a book for first-time visitors rather than locals or well-seasoned travelers.
I think this travel book is quite thorough. However, I would disagree with some of the author's "must see" attractions. There are some venues like Dr Pepper that shouldn't get a starred review while others like the LBJ Library and GW Bush Library which probably should.I am giving this book a 4 star for thoroughness (covers most attractions) but only 3 stars for its starred review opinions.
Recently decided to upgrade my Texas travel book. The one I have was circa 1998 and written by Joe Cummings -- 666 pages. A terrific travel resource, I just received my new "Texas" by Andy Rhodes. What a disappointment!! I could write pages about what I do not like about this book but the major disappointment is that Goliad the birthplace of the Texas Republic was deleted from this book. Really????? And, Caddo Lake info is totally inaccurate. Plus so little info on Lake Sam Rayburn . We travel and have travelled Texas extensively and have relied on the old Joe Cummings book. Will have to slap some more tape on it so I can continue to use it. And, will have to find a use for the Rhodes version -- I have several ideas in mind!
Wish I could review this book. Seems like it was probably a good book but printing is so small, that I was unable to read it. My vision is worse than I thought apparently.
A couple years back, my family of four (2 small young 'ens) decided we go on a road trip in Texas once a year in the summer.I ventured into the travel section on this site, and after seeing the vast offerings, this book stood out right away.The format and highlights of how the book breaks down each region of the state is excellent. The reviews and notes on each city were dead-on with every place we've been the past four years. The author presents the material in an excellent manner and seems to know the entire state (we have visited four cities very far apart from the other).I recommend this book for an individual or a family who want to get to know Texas and its diverse cultures. Our family can't wait for many ventures to come with this book as the road map.
I am a sixth generation Texan, but there are still places that I haven't visited. Moon Texas has so many good suggestions.This guide book is not stuffy or boring. It's fun to read, and it is conversational in tone-like a friend telling you about the best places they visited while exploring Texas. It makes it easy to plan trips from whatever major city or region you're in.I highly recommend this book.
Traveling with a family of four and this Moon guide was a great resource. I needed options for the kids as well as some adult nights out and I was able to find suggestions for both. There are several books that cover the bigger cities separately but I needed one source to help us in the road.
