A fascinating account of being seduced by Scientology and finally breaking free. The book is beautifully written and remarkably honest and brave, especially considering what the repercussions are for apostates who write about Scientology. I was engrossed by the book -- her family stories, the seductiveness of Scientology and the realization that she had to leave are all woven together into a lyrical and riveting memoir. I finished the book in one weekend. Highly recommended.
Wisdom, reflection and brutal honesty abound in this gripping memoir. I write this as someone who could care less about Scientology. Never tempted. I have my own demons when it comes to misguided paths, those taken and those narrowly avoided. On a larger scale, though, this is what FLUNK.START. is about. Those paths. Or as said more gracefully by author Sands Hall: “…we wouldn’t be who we are without having had those years and learned those lessons in our particular underworlds.†So, if you are looking for a beautifully crafted memoir that might speak to your own very different experience -and to family dynamics and challenges as well - here is one to read. I loved Sands Hall’s novel CATCHING HEAVEN. Years earlier I learned so much in one of her writing workshops that I contracted with her to critique a manuscript. She was specific and yet did not tell me exactly what to do. Instead, she led me to a tell a much better story. I will never forget that. This memoir is equally unforgettable.
One of the many joys Sands Hall’s memoir, Flunk. Start. Reclaiming My Decade Lost in Scientology, affords the reader is the delight the author takes in the material of language. As she tells the story of a pivotal ten years of her life, from her gradual enmeshment in the Church through her disentanglement from it, she pauses often to consider a particular word, its definition, derivations, and connotations.Zealot. Claptrap. Memoir. Muffin. Overt. Thetan. Sardonic. Convert.Readers who know her other work (the novel Catching Heaven, Tools of the Writer’s Craft, and the play Fair Use) Are not surprised that Hall would do this, of course, because she is a gifted and masterful writer. But as she explains in Flunk. Start., while Hall may always have been a wordsmith, it is also true that her fascination with definitions derives from her time in Scientology. Perhaps the religion’s most basic tenant, the Study Tech, dictates that one must define any word one doesn’t understand. In the clean, well-lighted rooms of a Scientology Mission, the dictionary is nearly a sacred object.Scientologists revere the dictionary? How could this be? Everyone knows that Scientology is not a religion but a fancy pyramid scheme invented by a science fiction writer, and the people who practice it are members of a mind-closing, language-limiting cult. And yet--Hall reveals how the certainties the Church offers are not just poison, but also balm, especially for people who have experienced trauma and grief.Conundrum. Flunk. Start. is dense with them, and this is another of the book’s gifts to a reader. There were times reading Flunk. Start. when the suffering Hall describes almost broke me as a reader. In the chapter titled “Modernism?,†she recounts those awful first months after she left the church, staying up night after night fearing her soul would never go clear, never find peace.Harrowing.This was the word these passages conjured for me. But as I finished the book, with its remarkable return to where it started, I was reminded of the other meaning of harrowing, as in reaping or winnowing, Jesus descending into hell between his death and his resurrection in order to save the damned. Flunk. Start. is a gift to anyone who has sought spiritual awakening in an insufficient place. By its end, the book grants wisdom in abundance.I was fortunate to be one of Hall’s readers during the years that she wrote Flunk. Start--or, to choose another word I think--hope--she would appreciate, she wrought it. Taking the material of this one decade of her life, which felt so heavy and hard and ugly to her--like iron--she used the heat of her hands and mind to make it malleable again. I was in awe as I watched her go in for revision after revision, as I watched her turn what had felt to her like a mistake into something much more complex and beautiful: this book.
This isn't just another ex-scientologist divulging the gory details of their time spent in a cult.I was pleased to read about the origins of Ms. Hall's spiritual curiosity and the influence of her family to initially reject most religious paths, only to find herself enthralled with Scientology of all things! The arduous journey required to free oneself of a cultish "religion" and the mental grip it has makes for a compelling read. Ms. Hall successfully shares her story in this book. There is no Scientology-bashing to be found, just an interesting look back on how Sands Hall became the person she is today.
This is a fascinating, fluidly-written account of the author's struggle to find herself vis-a-vis her creative family and her reluctant but increasingly immersive adherence to the Church of Scientology. You root for her, even as you shudder to watch her slowly accept the littlest details of the church dogma. (In that regard, you learn exactly what a devotee does and believes, which alone is worth the purchase price of the book.) Sands doesn't lay a lot of blame on the church and highlights the good things she learned. But you cheer when she finally breaks free. A treasure.
I do not like memoirs. However--This one is excellent. The author (narrator) completely drew me in. She makes a good case for the potential of being drawn in to a group in our wish for a life with meaning. The author has a beautiful voice and I came to look forward to the song bursting out from time to time. The audio version is very appealing.
Flunk. Start. is a great story, one of my favorite reads in a long time. The story is compelling, a family saga interwoven with the author’s journey in and out of a cult. It’s beautifully written. It got me thinking about what it means to be human, how we quest for ways to make sense of everything, find truth, and be good and noble. I couldn’t stop reading—or I should say listening—because I had lots of gardening to do, so along with the hard copy, I purchased the audible version. The author’s physical voice seemed to amp the power of her written words.
