About the Author
Deana Lawson (born in Rochester, New York, 1979) (born in Rochester, New York, 1979) received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her photography has been exhibited widely, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and the 2018 Whitney Biennial. My first introduction to Deana Lawson was the cover of Blood Orange's Freetown. It led to me finding more of Deana's work and being very excited for her first monograph to be published. It doesn't disappoint. The cover is a lush purple cloth. The book itself has a very clean layout with great images.Her portraits of blacks across the globe are striking and distinctive. There aren't any easy stereotypes or stories to be drawn from her portraits but a steady tension of stillness and formality. These individuals know they're being photographed and she makes their environments an added element of context. Posters on the wall, kids toys in the corners and family photos on the shelf give us a deeper look into the places these people spend their days and lives.I'm glad this was published and I grab it while you can. It's sad but rare we get to see minorities in a light like this from the perspective of another person of color.
