Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

I purchased this in audiobook format for a recent trip hoping that the hallmarks of a Vince Flynn "Mitch Rapp" novel would be apparent - the non-stop action, the prescient "insider" viewpoint, the twisty, creative story line and activist vs the bureaucrat confrontations that marked his earlier works and I was not disappointed. Granted, there are few shades of gray in a Rapp thriller and the characters can often be wooden and thinly developed but hey, no one is nominating these stories for a Nobel or Pulitzer prize and they are great mind candy and good entertainment. The miles went by quickly!I also have to admit to being taken by Flynn's personal story. Starts reading a lot to get past his dyslexia then begins to write. Quits his job, moves to Denver (1997) to finish his novel "Term Limits" and receives 60 rejection notices from publishers so self publishes and it becomes a hit. Now, the publishers are interested and he goes on to land 14 novels on the best seller list. Pretty scary to be at the top of a very tough mountain to climb and die from prostate cancer at age 47 in 2013.

As I was finally finishing this book, I remembered that Vince Flynn was nearing his death when he was wrapping this book up. It was a very good Mitch Rapp book. He was able to write most of The Survivor after this one. Previously, I read each Vince Flynn book as it came out, but got side-tracked with other stuff after Extreme Measures. After some time, I came back to start reading them again. There are many other good terrorists fighters out there in novels now, but Mitch Rapp was an original and is still one of the best. The plot holds up well even after all these years have passed.

I circle the date on my calendar when a Vince Flynn novel is due. The wait is always worth it. This time was no exception. An intelligence asset in Pakistan goes missing from a safe house. Rapp and his team are called in to assess the damage and find Joe Rickman, the missing operative. Rickman is a high value target - he knows names, dates and places and has planned many of the undercover operations against terrorist groups. Director Kennedy fears the fallout of Rickman's capture and resulting damage to her intelligence network. But even before Rapp can launch an investigation all hell breaks loose on the ground in Pakistan.'The Last Man' is vintage Flynn - Mitch is front and center of an action packed, tension filled story. Things are never quite as they are portrayed. The writing is as good as the story, confrontations between Mitch, Kennedy and the bad guys du jour is worth the price. The current events aspect is so real you wonder how Flynn gets so close to the terrifying truth.HIGHLY RECOMMEND

At this point, it is difficult to review any Mitch Rapp novel differently than the ones which came before. Vince Flynn has created an excellent and believable character, one dedicated to the safety of our nation, and over-all justice for those who would bring down the US.As an aging Hippie Flowerchild, I am fascinated by my having become so taken in by characters of this type. Perhaps there is a pragmatic side of me that says Peace and Love will work in the long run, but somebody needs to help it along, by removing all horrible obstacles. And that is what Mitch Rapp and his group of patriots do; they remove obstacles to our country moving forward. If you have enjoyed pervious novels by Vince Flynn, you will certainly enjoy this one as well.

It has been my pleasure to read all of Vince Flynn's novels, including his latest one, The Last Man. Flynn writes of the exploits of Mitch Rapp, the most clandestine of the agents of the CIA's Clandestine Service. He is the guy the President and the CIA Director, Irene Kennedy, call on when it is necessary to take the war on terrorism in the most direct way possible to the baddest of the bad guys. As Flynn's readers know, the really bad guys are not necessarily running around the desert and blowing up stuff. Nonetheless, the one thing no bad guy wants to hear is that Mitch Rapp is on his trail. When that happens, the bad guys "need to put their affairs in order." In The Last Man, one of the CIA's most knowledgeable agents is kidnapped in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. So, before the agent, Joe "Rick" Rickman, can be induced to give up the secrets he harbors, Mitch and his support crew have to locate and rescue him. The search takes Mitch in and out of a number of garden spots in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where he discovers, wonder of wonders, that not all of our so-called allies in the region are really looking out for the best interests of the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. The plotline takes the reader through the political terrain I envisioned existed in Pakistan when I contemplated how Osama Bin Laden managed to evade capture for a decade past 9/11. This is a really interesting novel that gives us a chance to reacquaint ourselves with the ever-stalwart Irene Kennedy, who is a fictional breath of fresh air after watching one real-life CIA director recently go down in flames. Vince Flynn is right up there among the best of our thriller writers and I heartily recommend The Last Man to readers who enjoy the genre. If any reader hasn't sampled Flynn's wares to date, I suggest you go to the beginning and check out Term Limits, the only one of the author's novel that does not star tough-guy Mitch Rapp.

I was just over halfway through this book (265 pages) when I came to the conclusion that there had only been one fight/battle scene. In other words, this story was quite boring. It had been a few years since I read a Vince Flynn novel and I thought this one was going to be as thrilling and full of action as any other Rapp series. But, "The Last Man" was anything but. A lot of backroom conspiring and dialog but no action. I was severely disappointed. I have read all but just a couple of the Rapp series and it seems to me that Flynn made be losing his touch. If you are used to the high action, covert ops type of stories from Flynn, I wouldn't bother with this one.
