These guides may not be the one you read before you go on vacation, but they are the ones you take with you because they fit in a purse or small backpack. Maps have enough detail to get you to the restaurant or museum you are looking for, and they are divided by sections of the city. You get a feel for what that neighborhood is like by the dozen or so descriptions below the map of places you find there. We buy them for every city we visit; they are also a nice way to remember where you have been. You can mark those streets and places with a highlighter.
We used this Knopf mapguide (along with ones for Naples, Rome, and Athens) during a recent European cruise. We found them to be easy to use, unobtrusive, and easily carried.We used it extensively during our visit to Istanbul. Streets and places of interest are clearly marked. The book is divided into pop-out sectional maps for each major neighborhood. The construction and paper appear to be quite durable.My only gripe is where a neighborhood crosses to a different sectional map, it's sometimes hard to get oriented. If the book was just 1/2 inch narrower, I'd give it 5 stars. The guide is just barely small enough to fit into a rear pants pocket, or into a jacket, but it's a tight fit.
Good for what they cover. Most importqnt, it fitsw easily in a daypack so that you will actually use it. Recommendations are fairly standard for sites, more interesting for restaurants. No map or guide of Istanbul that I have seen gives adequate information on how to use the ferry system.
Maps are small and hence often inaccurate; however they giwe a reasonably good overall idea of the separateneighborhoods described. Follows a good list of what to see on every map ... but then you need a larger guide
How can Knopf publish a map that does not show the tramline from Eminonu to Findiki along the Bosporus. This is like a map o New York City that doesn't show the A/C line to Brooklyn. Wait until you get there and buy a Falk Stadtplan (city map).
