Having years of experience at hearing (and telling) flying tales, I thought I'd try this one on, and see how it compared with the stories I've heard from bush pilots who alternated between Alaska and Africa. As a read by an American pilot, not knowing much in depth of South Africa's history and conflict, it's very informative, very good at telling the flying and the ground life, on the front and life on leave, touching only on the politics as they affected the author. It's a great tale. However, there are a lot of metaphors, references, and phrases in Afrikaans that are completely opaque, and never explained, so I went to my favorite South African for explanation. He turned a little pink at the tips of his ears and cheekbones, and though he corrected my pronunciation on many things, refused to tell a lady what many of the Afrikaaner phrases meant. (The context is clear.) Other things, that I thought odd nicknames, suddenly had this very quiet gentleman expounding at some length and with depth of feeling upon local bugs and snakes, army rations, thornbush, and habits of humans. Other accounts read in the book had him shaking with laughter, and recounting similar things he'd seen (the mention of the santa claus suit had him laughing like a drain, and recalling a sling-load delivered santa and a thornbush). And then we got to the last third of the book, and as I tried to sound out a river, I suddenly recognized this foreign word. "...and drop two sections of Recces north of Xangongo... WAIT! Is that YOUR bridge at Xangongo?"He acquired a smile like a cat with a cream mustache, read the passage, and started chuckling. "Oh, yes, it's one of the many versions of that bridge at Xangongo. This was an earlier version. Let me tell you a little about Africa and demolitions..."So for Americans, this is a great story. For those who've been there and done that, it's a far better one.
Awesome story that most of us South Africans who spent time in the National Service will laugh along and reminisce, only that the author took advantage of all opportunities. Cheers and we'll done for an awesome read.
From Father's Moustache to Ondangwe to Ongiva - an outstanding narrative which captures an era and all of what it was about! The loss of the Puma in '82 on Op's Meerbos was a focus [in my mind] at yesterday's ANZAC dawn parade in rural New Zealand. Some 30 years after the event; we will remember them. On a lighter note the polony story appealed to my sense of humour such that fellow Parabats (one who flies choppers in Saudi Arabia), pilot mates and Skydivers around the globe have been encouraged to buy the book. Great job Nick!
A well written easy to read account of the authors personal experience. Humble and understated which is refreshing these days. An excellent combination of action, humour and real life.
Interesting story of flying helicopters with the South African Air Force before the fall of apartheid. This is the first story I have read of flying in South Africa's wars in Angola. The author gives what I believe an honest review of what he experienced during those times.
In the past, I read of Vietnam War Huey Chopper pilots. This one is a special read indeed.
Took me back to my days of conscription and later working in the 'operational area'. The pilots, and especially the chopper pilots, were a breed apart and held in awe by troopies like me. This book shows why. I hated the army, the war, the government but you absolutely have to credit what these guys did and the valour that they showed. And through it all is the looming threat of deadly action and tragic outcomes. Well done Kalusie!
I enjoyed reading this book so much that I found it hard to put it down. The writer managed to put the right weight where it belonged.
